I messed up and added a quart too much oil.

When I did that to my wife's '01 Altima, I drained the excess into something clean and used it to change the oil in my lawnmower. I couldn't believe it only held 4 quarts. It's an easy fix, why risk it?

Too much oil actually kills horsepower, and can do harm to your engine. An episode of Engine Masters by The Motor Trend Group showed how much power was killed by being one quart over full. Also, as the crank is spinning, if there is too much oil, the crank can spin through the oil and cause aeration of the oil which will make air bubbles in the oil. That can lead to a decrease in oiling capabilities
