Re: 1969 C10 SWB - Big Block project

Here's another picture I took from the tailgate area. I can't wait to see it in the sun!

The body shop is color sanding the clear, then a good buffing will really make the color stand out.

Re: 1969 C10 SWB - Big Block project

Got the bed back this weekend, Pop and I are going to work on the chrome and bed wood, tail lights, etc. I'm really happy with how it came out. It needs a little attention inside the bed but there's plenty of clear on it, and a small run on the pass side between the color (under the trim anyway) but other than that, man it is killer in the sun. Once we get it all together I'll 'fine tune' it if you know what I mean.

Thanks fellas ! I have a Porterbuilt Stage 2 kit now, so it will have a mild notch CPP trailing arms and cross member, and Schrader bags in the rear. Just to get it down a little at shows and stuff. No air management just a happy point between a static drop and a better ride.

Looks amazing with the trim. And after seeing first hand what you did with that old black paint job, I can't imagine how slick this will be when you're done

Just read the whole thread, what a story and an awesome build. That gold is beautiful. Hard to go wrong with a BMW color. It has to be a great feeling being able to work on your truck with your Dad. Looking forward to seeing the end result.

Re: 1969 C10 SWB - Big Block project

I worked on the tail light housings this morning, and decided to paint a reflective silver on the faces to improve brightness. We have NOS GM tail light lenses and back up lenses to finish them off. We are waiting for new gaskets and stainless screws for them and I picked up some new bulbs.

is there a reason/trick behind painting the bed before the rear brace is tacked in?

I guess you could do it either way, but Chad wanted to make sure that the area that slides into the bed sides was fully protected with paint. With the brace out, it also gives more clearance to get to the bolts holding the CST trim near the tail gate area. Since the rear brace bolts into the bed sides we decided to install it separately.

Good idea on the housings. I've found that makes a big difference in light output.

Looks great Pop, Once I get some of the other projects finished up I'll be there to help you..

Have you heard any more on the cab and front sheet metal? It looked like the cab was about ready to spray.

Re: 1969 C10 SWB - Big Block project

We have been working on the bed wood. 3 coats of Mahogany stain (we wanted it really dark), 4 coats of MinWax Helmsman Gloss Spar Varnish sanded progressively between coats. We started with Northern Red Oak and planed, notched and cut to size. It's going to look really good with the Gold bed sides.
