Strange noise in my garage?

Every night when Im sitting here surfing the net, I can hear a strange clicking noise coming from the other front corner in my garage. Its definately an animal or something but I can never find anything. It has always happened later on at night but it started tonight about 7:30 PM. My son & my wife said I was hearing things but have both heard it now too. We have no clue what it is. If I flip on the lights over there or go over to that side & make noise it will stop but I sure cant find an animal at all. Always the same exact spot, down low by the floor. It must be something around the foundation. It sounds a little like a loud ratchet type deal in short bursts, off & on for @ 30 seconds, but that might be because Im over there digging around by then. Been going on for a couple weeks now & I cant figure it out. My little dog that hangs out in the garage with me at night, never moves when it happens. Kinda like he doesnt even hear it. If I could find it, it would be dead by now. It sounds like one of these turning a little at a time.

Re: Strange noise in my garage?

A rat chewing on pipes inside your walls, crawlspace or attic. If there are any pipes running in the wall, the sound could be carrying down or up the pipe. I'd check the crawl and attic to see if there are any signs of chew marks.

Cicada(s?) make a clicking sound. It's exactly the way you described. They used to scare me to death as a little boy.

Re: Strange noise in my garage?

A strange noise in my garage would be something running. No strange noises to report.

Re: Strange noise in my garage?

We had a packrat chew thru the subfloor of our trailer house, then built a nest under our bedroom floor. He'd chew awhile, then quit, then chew real fast, then slow. Like to drove us nuts. Finally found the hole underneath, set a big rat trap and got 'im. That was when we first got married.
