Rust around windshield

Just ordered the repair panel to fix the last rusty area on my truck. Does anyone have some pics from when they did this repair? Thanks

Yea, pics of your truck and the area would be necessary to get things moving for you.

Here is where my rust was and how I fixed it. Cut out the rusty area, welded in new metal and ground it down smooth. It would basically work the same no matter where the rust was.

Re: Rust around windshield

I did. I also bought the upper patch panel behind the sun visors and only used what I needed to get back to good metal. So from the pinch weld up it was about 3in up. I'll try to post pictures but for some reason it wont let me from my gallery only by taking new ones with the camera option.

Yep that’s the best advice for rust repair in my opinion. Just because you have a whole patch panel doesn’t mean you necessarily need to use it.

Re: Rust around windshield

How do you guys weld that in without warping it? I would think that it would be very distorted without planishing the weld, and you need access to the back for that.

Re: Rust around windshield

I've always stitch welded, VERY slowly. Small short welds a fair distance apart giving lots of time for the metal to cool. This idea is to not get the metal hot. Some guys blow compressed air on the weld after to cool it off. I've never had luck with that. Eventually you have it all welded in without distortion. The next tricky part is grinding it smooth without heating it up. Again going really slow is the trick. I find ,I have more trouble with the grinding part than the welding. The more you do ,the better you'll get at it. Good luck.

Re: Rust around windshield

To tag on to this - I recently looked a one that was ok on the floor but there was an outside hole above the windshield, a corresponding one inside above the windshield and it was pretty rotten above the driver door opening.

Looking in the LMC catalog, I see an interior patch where the sunvisors are, and an exterior strip above the windshield, but don't see anything for above the doors. Does someone make a patch for this area?

Re: Rust around windshield

If the floors are good I’d clip the roof off of another truck. Honestly it’s easier than to start digging into the roof rust. What you see on the outside is only a small portion of what’s really there most of the time.

When I did mine there were some spots that required me to just make little patches with spare metal. If it's not in a corner or something odd, it's not too bad to just make em.
