If i could ask a related question; Are the new bowtie sportsman blocks such as 12480175, 12480157 and 159 actual 400 blocks?

What i'm trying to get at is are these essentially "new 400" blocks as an alternative to looking for and buying used?

I think there are just 350 blocks made into 400 cubic inch.

i.c., so this could be an alternative to getting 400+ cubes AND have all the advantages of a 383 stroker because these blocks can also take a 3.75" or greater crank?

So this could be an alternative to trying to find a good 400 block? i know that the bowties probably cost at least 2K, but when you consider the time savings etc.........?

you just have to watch how much you bore and stroke it, on 400 blocks the cylinders are very close together. and if you need to clearance the block for a larger than 3.75 stoke your gonna be in the water jacket. unless you do it carefully.

i guess what i'm trying to get at is maybe this could be a way to get 400 cubes in a small block without trying to hunt down an actual original 400 block.


i know the price is a little steep but it could save a lot of time---what if you did manage to find an original 400 block only to find that it's too cracked up?

The only block of this family, 400 cu in (6.6 L) small-block, was introduced in 1970 and produced for 10 years. It was loosely based on the medium journal 350 and had a 4.125-inch (104.8 mm) bore and a 3.75-inch (95.3 mm) stroke. The 400 differed from other small blocks in that the cylinders were siamesed, used a 2.65” large journal, and oftentimes had one more freeze plug on both the left and right sides of the block. Initial output was 265 hp (198 kW) and was only available equipped with a 2-barrel carburetor. In 1974 a 4-barrel version of the 400 was introduced, while the 2-barrel version stopped production in 1975. 1976 was the last year that the 400 was used in a Chevrolet Passenger car, available in both A-Body and B-Body lines. While popular with circle-track racers and drag racers, the engine was prone to cooling troubles if cylinder heads without steam holes were used.

As far as buying used engines you have inspect the engine over and know what to look for. If the engine is together it makes it harder unless you know the person very well. There is alot of untrustworthy people out there looking for a dollar and will lie cheat and steal with a smile. The thing with crate engines is that they come with a Warranty. (read fine print)
They are Pro's and Con's between both. I rather have the old stuff.
But if I was looking for a crate engine... I would go for the Edelbrock Crate Engines.

C-10 IMO that is very sound thinking. And in line with what your looking for.... The Dart Little M, or the Motown is the 'ideal' 400 block with 400 mains. I've got one of each in my own personal junk and so far can't say I have an opinion on which is better than the other. The Motown got a bit of a bad rep over the internet 5 or so years ago, But I've been running one as a 434 at 800 n/a HP and shifting at 7600rpm in the Nova since 2004.

All of the 'ills' of the production casting is cured in these aftermarket blocks.,, solid deck thick enough to have blind holes for all the head studs,, main web problems, cylinder walls thick enough to tolerate a 4.20" bore and still handle 1000HP, TRUE proprity main oiling.

The Dart 'SHP' block is only offered in 350 mains (even tho capable of a 4.20 bore also) but is a VERy solid platform too and a bit les than the Little M.

But speaking of little M....
these things always look so funky as a porcupine I just had to share
