Is it a wheel bearing problem??

Hey all,

While I have been redoing the brakes etc I have noticed some slight movement in the passenger side front hub.

If I grab the backing plate at the top it will rock slightly with just a bit of movement.

When I look behind the hub I can see the movement is around the king pin.

I also noticed that the grease nipple is missing so wondered if replacing it and regressing might take up the slop??

Any ideas re king pin, tie rod adjustments that might help. I see in the manual that there are some adjusting points just not sure where or what to look for.

Could it be wheel bearings or any other issue.

Was hoping to get on for rego inspection this week but this could kill that idea.

i would try to load up the kingpins with grease first to see if you can make up the difference in play with the grease or your kingpin bushings might be blown out if they are moving that much..

The grease will take up the slack temporarily but when you start driving it it will be squished out and the slop will be back. It's time to redo the kingpins.

movement between the backing plate and drum would be bearing
any other top/bottom movement will be king pins
if the grease zerk is missing, it probably hasn't been greased in a while
re-king pin and grease frequently

We tend to forget that when these trucks were new they got greased and an oil change every 1000 miles. Back in the 50's and earlier that might take three months or more and now we sometimes rack up 500 miles on a weekend going to a show and back. We put 750 miles on the daily driver this weekend on a road trip to Coeur d' Alene and back with a couple of side trips this weekend. That would just about unheard of in the 50's. I remember a road to San Diego and back with my dad in the early 60's and he had the oil changed and car serviced before we left here and then had it done again in San Diego when we got there. Now some guys would drive their new rigs down and back and not even open the hood to check the oil.

Thanks guys,

King pin it is then.

I'm not going to get parts or the job done by Friday which is when I want to take it in for rego inspection.

Will repackage with grease and hope the inspector doesn't find it!

Inspection place is about 2 kms away so will baby it there and back and then fix.

Any advice on where to get parts and I assume my 3600 front end is the same as the 3100?

48, we are certainly spoilt these days with our our easy, modern vehicles with long service intervals and very little to do in between those services. It's easy to forget that our old trucks need our attention much more often.

No, looks like 3600 and 3100 are different. These are listed on Classics as 3/4 and 1 ton.



Shipping is going to kill me!!!
