Question Need Help w/the 4WD

Ok I've never had a 4wd before so I need some help with the basic procedure.

I see my Sub has what looks like Warn manual locking hubs. Can someone let me the proper way to engage the 4wd. When to do so and when not to? And when to use H or L?

Thanks!

Re: Need Help w/the 4WD

get out and lock the hubs anytime you think you may need 4wd...unlock when not needed.....when needing 4wd in the snow, or light mud 4 hi will be fine...you need 4 low when climbing technical trails...more pulling power, or heavy thick mud...you'll learn which is better for your driving style as you play...have fun!

Re: Need Help w/the 4WD

The hubs you can lock whenever. I used to lock them before I left the house in my 'yota if I was going wheeling or the weather was bad. I would use 2wd untill I needed the extra traction then I could just pop it into 4wd without getting out in the mud/snow. When your done you can unlock the hubs.

As far as which range to use you will mostly be in 4hi. I only used 4low on steep hills or in really rough stuff.

Re: Need Help w/the 4WD

Thanks guys.. I feel kinda dumb asking but I never knew.

Ok.. so just lock them before I leave.. and when I need 4wd, just put it park and then shift it in 4 hi, then D and go?

I thought I had to put it in reverse to engage the hubs or no?

Re: Need Help w/the 4WD

The factory automatic locking hubs required you to back up ten feet after shifting from 4wd to 2wd to unlock the hubs.

The manual hubs won't need that step.

You can shift from 2hi to 4hi when driving under 35 (I think it's 35, but you can be moving), but you do have to shift to neutral to go from 4hi to 4lo.

Re: Need Help w/the 4WD

Just try to remember to "unlock" your hubs when not in use. The residual drag will drop your MPG.
