I hear you on the paint deal. I didn't know if you were doing just an engine compartment update (fresh motor & clean-up detail) or more. If just the engine compartment, I did the motor, firewall, & inner fenderwells on mine w/o anything to the exterior. But.... Block off plates work too.

Nice project.
Damn, wish I would have known about those before going out and buying these tires. We're gunna see where we're at with these tires and see what the remaining funds look like at the end and then I'll consider the Nittos.

They made some great progress the last couple days getting the front suspension completed, front brakes on, mounting the air tank brackets, and putting on the new bumper with hidden hitch.

Re: 72 Highlander LWB w/ 5.3 and 6L80e

Got the motor back in, started plumbing the air ride, plumbing the fuel system, and the cab back on. They're making a mount for the valves and e level controller to mount them behind the seat and they're going to make a similar mount for the ECU.

Very nice progress! That chassis is really nice, love the brake upgrades too. couple of questions, Are you going to fix the rust in the cab/rocker(s)? What are you planning to do with your coil packs?

I'm not planning on doing any body repairs to it right now, just leave it as is. Further down the road I might decide to redo the body/paint to fix the rust and actually paint it the correct green but it's not anywhere in the near future.

The coil packs I think we're going to mount them off the back of the motor. I plan on changing the intake shortly after we get it running. I originally wanted to try to mount them inside the frame rail but with the way the tubes are routed on the Dougs headers it blocks a couple of the wires from getting up to the plug.

Your build is coming along Nicely! Are you adding the TUTD feature for the tranny? Would you mind getting me the part number off of the transmission shield on the right side of the tranny? I misplaced mine and need to get a replacement. Thanks.

I'll be up there on Friday and I'll try to remember to take a look and write it down for you.

Re: 72 Highlander LWB w/ 5.3 and 6L80e

Got the truck on the ground and moving up and down tonight. I'm gunna be driving up to Houston tomorrow morning so I'll be able to get some better pictures and hopefully we'll get the chance to maybe set the bed on it this weekend. The K member is sitting on the ground in the pictures where the truck is laid out.

Re: 72 Highlander LWB w/ 5.3 and 6L80e

This picture is from a few days ago but it's the most up to date so far. I'm gunna be making another trip up to see it tomorrow and then I'll be leaving the country for a couple weeks. Hopefully it'll be done and driveable when I return. I almost thought about cancelling my trip just to help finish building the truck but I don't think the gf would be too happy about it.

The wheels, I really hope that the rears fit. After looking at some pictures I kind of wish I got 19 or 20s for the truck, but we'll see how the 18s look once it done and go from there. Besides for the size I love the style of these, they just don't make them bigger than an 18".

Got the motor painted, we'll start out with the truck intake to get it going and let my bank account recover a little bit. After everything is smoothed out hopefully this summer we'll go to a single plane (probably Victor Jr), throttle body adapter, and an old school round air filter.

Low hump cut out to make some room for the high hump giving us more clearance.

Finally, I decided to go ahead and upgrade to Vintage Air while we're at it. I plan to daily drive it and it gets 110+ down here regularly so a good AC is important. Good thing I did cause come to find out the mice had moved in at some point.

Awesome build! Did you purchase a hump for the cutout? (part number please?) Did you ever find out if it was necessary to cut it out in the first place?

Thanks!

Re: 72 Highlander LWB w/ 5.3 and 6L80e

I have the same question as hatzman. Does the 6L80 require a high hump trans tunnel?

Sorry I hadn't checked this thread in a little while. I'm not sure if the high hump was completely necessary, I just went ahead and bought one on here and installed it to eliminate the potential issue. I'll look at it again next time I'm there but I'm going to guess and say that the high hump was needed though to get the right driveline angle since I remember it being a very tight fit.

Here's a couple more pictures from a few weeks ago, we're getting close to firing this thing off and hopefully driving it. The plan is to drive it with the elbow for a few months so that we can run a MAF setup to get all the kinks worked out and then we'll fabricate a mount to run a stock style intake filter.

Re: 72 Highlander LWB w/ 5.3 and 6L80e

I haven't posted an update on here recently but we got the truck running and driving. It's made a few trips around the block but still needs an alignment and a good tune before it's ready for some serious driving. Sorry I'm really lacking on the pictures and videos, I just have limited time to go and work on the truck and get into a zone and realize I should have taken more pics a couple days later.

Ride height:

Laid out, we put a skid plate under the k-member because the tires were pushing the inner fenders up when it was laid out and hopefully it'll help protect everything too.

And a picture of the interior with the Classic Intruments gauge cluster
