Jegs mini starter problem

Good Afternoon All

got a jegs mini starter part #555-10009,

had one i orginally installed January 2018, lasted 6 months, started cranking slow , then not at all

Jegs replaced with the same June of 2019, (no charge, good customer care to deal with every time ive dealt with them)

Went out today , started slow, but its been cold and ive been on call for a week so have not driven truck, went to mall, came back out, no start, only clicks

had a buddy stop and try to jump, no difference, finally got a metal rod and tapped starter, started right up

got home and tried, it did start but slow crank

does not have any binding or noise when regularly starting, sounds like a new vehicle, its usually that quiet

1972 C10, 350/4 bolt, 4 speed stick

anyone used the corvette starter with out any issues, part # if possible, might try that or ill just go back through jegs to replace

Thanks

Re: Jegs mini starter problem

Suggest you upgrade to the Tuff Stuff 3 HP starter unit....bit more expensive but much better in long run

https://www.jegs.com/i/Tuff-Stuff/908/6772B/10002/-1

The 555-10009 starter is 1.9 HP....

Just my ten cents worth...

I've heard good things about Delco 1022. At this point I can say it fits nicely, pending maiden voyage.

Re: Jegs mini starter problem

I would look into making sure the proper distance in the starter gear to flywheel is followed.

Most after market starters come with a shim kit, instructions, and a small round gauge to measure the distance.

Re: Jegs mini starter problem

ok, so the starter has not been an issue for a few days, was going to pull it next weekend, just went out to start truck, only clicked, so as i was walking away it started to try and engage the solenoid off and on,loud whine, key was off and out of truck, after running back in and out of garage, got battery cables unhooked

starter smelled and was hot, got my tools and removed, all wires looked ok, no melted or burnt wiring

question i have is should i install the starter solenoid setup and would it have helped or eliminated this issue, might have been easier to unhook

side note: starter is being sent back for replacement

Thanks

Re: Jegs mini starter problem

Also check your positive and negative cables from the battery to the starter, I just upgraded to 1/0 gauge and got better connectors after I melted the lead connectors to the battery while cranking.
