I have posted a couple pm's via contact seller in the for sale ads but haven't received any responses or anything. Is there a setting I'm missing? I don't have to be a supporting member for this do I? Should I just PM the member in general?

You can select to have a read receipt or confirmation when sending. Better yet you should be responding in the posts as outlined in the buying and selling guidelines posted globally. Most sellers will only reply in the actual thread, until a deal is made.
