Can I see your Valve Covers?

My wife asked me to get a list of things that I wanted for Christmas and I was thinking about getting a set of new valve covers. Can I see some pics of some different valve covers.

Re: Can I see your Valve Covers?

From GM performance u can get these but I would go with the aluminum/chrome. These are just aluminum and they are a pita for water spots.

Yes, you need to ventilate the engine somewhere else with those old style valve covers. Notice his intake manifold has a tube in front with a vented breather cap on it?

The early engines, which valve covers like that were originally intended to be used on, had a road draft tube on the rear of the block. The air rushing under the vehicle pulled a slight vacuum in the tube using a venturi effect. This sucked air through the vented oil filler tube and out the road draft tube under the car, effectively removing harmful vapors from inside the engine.

Later engines went to the PCV system, which introduced fresh air through one valve cover and vacuumed it out the other valve cover to remove the fumes.

You can get away with simply running a breather tube like he has in the picture above, but you must know up front, the engine will be sloppier and tend to weep oil around that filler tube, as there is no vacuum to pull it though the engine and out into the atmosphere.

Re: Can I see your Valve Covers?

my engines don't run sloppy!! what some people mistake for breathers is actually a pretty clever stelth pvc system that i'm setting up to look vintage with the modern benifits of the pvc system

Re: Can I see your Valve Covers?

Cdowns, I'm not trying to say your engine will run sloppy.

On another board I frequent, lots of the guys are putting smoothie valve covers on newer engines without road draft tubes, without any regard for decent venting or PCV action at all, and then they complain that the engines seep oil residue from every possible area. Go figure huh?

I've been mocking up an old Offenhauser SBC manifold I have for an underneath-the-manifold PCV system, so I too can have a stealth, yet modern, ventilated engine like you're apparantly planning.

No pictures, they`re stashed away. But,does anyone remember theGM Performance Parts chrome steel covers that had a bowtie and Chevrolet or Chevy Powered embossed on them?I have a pair of bare metal ones I plan to paint oeange with a blue bowtie and white letters for a custom, yet non-flashy look.I think they still make them.
