how do i change my oil on my rear diff? i've got an idea of how to do it. but i want to do it right and not screw it up. chevyguy

i might be wrong, but it takes me about 32.6 seconds to do a rear differential gasket change, so when i have to do the oil back there, which isn't often i just change the gasket too, am i wrong here?

First, see if you can get a gasket, otherwise you will have to use gasket in a tube. Leave one bolt at the top of the cover loose so when you get the rest of the bolts loose, the cover will hang rather than dropping. Have a big oil pan as the lube will come out fast. Not a lot of lube but it does gush out usually.

After draining, get gasket surface prepared and cleaned. Reinstall and then fill with at the fill plug. I found a pump you can attach to a gear lube bottle which sure makes it easy to fill the diff back up.

...and fill it to the bottom of the hole (it starts to drip out, or you can feel it with your finger.

Silicone II Window/Door sealer (blue/black tube). Works like a charm.
