Re: Am I basically a master chef

I ordered pork BBQ from a place in NC for my older son's HS graduation party in the '90s. It came in 5# or 10# frozen chunks packed with dry ice. I wonder if they do shipping like that. what's great is you go to a local sub shop, bar, or restaurant (not all these days) and that steak sub with be their shaved/chipped beef. They'll make me up a pound of whatever cut I want for the same price. The nephew just took it over in the last couple years, the third generation. Wednesday is the day they butcher, so the best day to shop is that afternoon. The word is out with the new town yuppies and Saturday mornings the place gets crammed.

I go to the ATCA National Meet at Macungie, PA in June. It's about 3 hours from here. I met a guy from upstate NY and when I told him the town I was from he said he had taken stock there for processing. I'm sure there are many such businesses between here and there, but he said a friend recommended this place. I've met other people some distance from here who know about them. I do feel lucky. The younger owner is putting out some cool specialties. Like the habanero mango bratwurst. Them some big boys, too! You need a sub roll for those! They do some others as well, rotated in. They also make maplewurst. Their link sausage/brats melts in your mouth.

The funny thing is one day there were protestors on the road out front... "Stop Killing Animals" signs and all. I believe in the rights to protest, but this really struck me as about as dumb as it gets. These are all the new people who bought new houses in the developments that tripled the size of this rural mid-Maryland AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY!! Of course for them it's a bedroom community and it's not about moving to the country to escape the suburban life for them. It's about bring all that crap with them and make it theirs. I asked them why they weren't in front of Safeway protesting their industrially raised meats from inhumane feed lots injected with hormones on a national level? These animals are local farm raised grazing in fields like the one where their houses were built. I told them these animals are raised by families for generations and this is the way of life in this area. The big one was "Why do your signs say stop killing animals? It would be more intelligent for them to say stop breeding animals. Should the farmers stop feeding them and just let them die in the fields once they've grazed the pastures bare? They spend a lot of money on raising them for a reason and it's not because they are pets".

The paper interviewed one woman and her daughter who had become vegetarians six months earlier and went vegan just a couple weeks prior to the protest. Here they were eating burgers at the cookout last summer and now they are telling the world they should do as they do. She also said, "I never knew this place was here". If she had been eating their burger she'd still be eating meat!
