14 bolt stripped axle
The rear end on my 98 k3500 quit with a bang a while back. It had been clunky for a long time, but I couldn't tell where the clunking was coming from. Sounded like a rattling under bed tool box lid. I pulled the differential cover, but couldn't tell anything. Maybe a table spoon of shavings on the magnet. It's an open differential. I pulled the axles, and found the
driver side stripped out at the splines. The passenger side looks okay. How would you proceed. I don't know lots about rear end repair. |

Re: 14 bolt stripped axle
I'd just look for a donor axle. Looks like a spider gear came apart and the pieces ground down the splines. The axle protruding into the center of the carrier past the side gear splines got torn up. You might be able to put guts int the carrier and a new axle and proceed down the road. But I wouldn't think a donor axle would be too expensive or hard to find.

Re: 14 bolt stripped axle
There were a lot of those made with posi, so if you look for a donor you just might find one that's not too more expensive than an open differential.
