Re: Another Crewcab build

It will get done someday, it just turned into much more of a project than I thought it would. Making a crew cab body is a big project. Building a 4x4 drivetrain is a project. Building a 4x4 suspension is a project... it's been a never ending project. Anyways, I decided to put my original '62 back together. I originally tore it apart to sacrifice the cab & bed for the crewcab, but decided it was too nice to cut up. So I pushed it outside, and let it set. I started a thread under projects for it here. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...44#post4467444

Here's a pic.

Re: Another Crewcab build

Ok, now that I'm goin full speed ahead on putting my '62 back together.... I've been thinking about this project again. The original plan was to build one truck that would do it all. 4 wheelin in the snow, carry the whole family, tow the race car, and serve as a backup daily driver.

I have a 455 that is an absolute torque monster. I have all the parts to build an NP205/203 doubler. A second set of rear springs for the front. An extra set of rear spring mounts... basically all the parts to do a clean slightly raised 4x4.

But the compromises were killing me. The long springs while being great for off road would make towing a nightmare. Although the 455 has mountains of torque (510 ft-lb stock) its gas mileage sucks. The transfer case and front axle would hurt mileage, and sitting that high couldn't help the highway handeling either.

I thought about using a new LS motor for better mileage, but the mileage doesn't sound like it would be enough of an improvement to be worth the cost. The best answer seems to be a Cummins 4BT four cylinder turbo diesel. They seem to get 20+ mpg unloaded and 16+ pulling a trailer. The downside is they are supposed to shake your teeth out idleing around town. So.... why not build a dedicated highway hauler thats a 2 wheel drive, dually with the diesel, and use the 455 with the 4x4 running gear to build another truck?
Here are a couple of photoshops of just slamming the original idea on the ground, and picture of a truck I found on here that I really like as a 4x4.

Original plan.

Slammed.

He should get it done so he could have more room in his shop to get his Model A PU project going. or his GTO's or his Corvairs, his roundy round car or 1/4 midgets.

Re: Another Crewcab build

I'm still working on my old original '62.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=445177

The crew cab will have to wait. It seems the wife wants a new crew cab pickup anyhow. Kinda makes sense. So by the time I get back to building the crew cab, the kids will be grown and gone

I keep watching yours. It's quite the inspiration. I need to come over and see it in person.

anytime!
I am trying to post as many pics as I can to answer all the questions that I had for how to build one myself (hopefully to help others with the same questions), but seeing it really helps.
