Re: Home robbery deterrent advise

He said the burglars wore white cleaning gloves. My guess is they were crawling to avoid being seen through windows. And I hear you about Legos. The manufacturer recently released special padded house slippers because of that issue. Their spikes grow larger as the sun drops. Not sure they would help since the burgles occur in the daytime.

Re: Home robbery deterrent advise

So the video that I had referred to (wish I could post it) was put on this little community forum / app thing called NextDoor that I have on my phone. Usually it is filled with classifieds, notifications of events and also a crime and safety section.
Today I actually did some work for the people who posted that video. I installed 7 motion sensor lights, 6 timer switches and got a bunch of their other lights working right. Basically worked my a** off on a Sunday.
I got the strong feeling that they weren't comfortable in their home anymore and were doing whatever they could to get things back to normal. Made me feel like crap. I had started out thinking that it would only take a few hours. Started at 8:30 and figured Id be home by noon to finish my camera install. We actually finished at 5:30. The last 5-1/2 hours were on me. It wasn't about the money in the first place. They seemed very grateful that the work was done. The guy tipped me 100$ and the woman gave me a nice bottle of wine. Wish I knew more about wine (Im a beer guy except for when its a Jack and Coke) but she said it was a good one. As I was leaving, I went to shake hands and both of them gave me a hug.. which under normal circumstances would be a little weird for me. It was then that I realized how shaken up they were. Hopefully I helped them on their way to getting back to normal.
Just a weird kind of day. Much like peeing in a wetsuit - gives you a warm feeling but no one around you notices. Just thought Id share.

Re: Home robbery deterrent advise

One more thing, The Sheriff caught a couple (man and woman) mid burglary. The found some of my neighbor's stuff that wasn't very "sale able" when they searched their hotel room. Unfortunately, they had less than 950$ in stolen goods in their possession at the time which I guess means that the Sheriff had to release them (there's a great Cali law for you). To top that off, a few more burglaries happened when the two meth heads were in custody which means that there are multiple groups breaking in to houses. The whole situation just blows. Hope that I have my system up before the end of the week.

Re: Home robbery deterrent advise

Quick update, all but two of the five cameras are up and running and appear to be working well. I have to pipe in the last two and between work, weather and family Christmas parties, I just haven't been able to get to it. The first night that they were running, I had gone out in the front to see that the inflatable snowman that we put up was moved into the middle of the walkway up to the front door. 2-3' from where we put it. Immediately suspecting foul play, I ran back inside and replayed that camera only to find, wait for it, it was the wind that moved it. lol. My wife thinks I'm a jack ass but she is thankful that the system is working and it gave her a good laugh.

On a more serious note though, there were 5 burglaries since Wednesday. All with the same MO. There have been a few neighborhood watches started but all have been after the fact. I suspect that its gonna be like this for a while. Just waiting to come home to a broken in house. Blows!

Anyway, thanks to all for the great suggestions and for listening to my rants! Hopefully someday I will be able to add something good to one of your conversations.
Thanks,
Chris
