Great series! He talks you through his work, so the pace is a little slow. But the craftsmanship will suck you in. I found someone new to subscribe to.

That's sort of how I built my bench top (all the 2x4's on edge). In the end I covered the top with laminate and put some rough cut trim on the edges. It takes a lickin =)
