Re: Part time job ideas

My dad worked at a small Ace Hardware after he retired. He really loved that job. But the big box hardware came in to town and Ace closed down. The same thing happened here with our Ace when Lowes came in. My wife suggested I go there and apply, but Id like to be able to control my hours a little better than they probably let you.

If I was accused of such a h-anus crime, I would demand her pants be removed for evidence. Verify hand prints... I'd need all the help I could get.

I agree. Remove those pants.

Larry. I wouldn't have to worry about my assets. I'd be 6 feet under.

Many years ago when my wife turned 40, I told her I was gonna trade her in on two twenties.

She told me I wasn't wired for 220.

She was right.

Re: Part time job ideas

I've retired twice, and from full time work at 62. Since then I've driven as a courier for a hospital, a shuttle service to and from the airport, a gig at a local hot rod shop, and repairing/building model ships.
The driving was fun until people on the road starting getting rude, dangerous, and road rage has become a "thing". I remember when someone annoyed you, you flipped them off, (or they flipped you off), but five minutes later it's forgotten. Today it's different.
The hot rod shop became too much creeping, twisting, and bending that this old worn out body didn't like.
The model building is a good thing, on a bench, inside, tunes, coffee, and own hours, but the pay makes it a good hobby.
If I were ten years younger - OK, 15 years younger I'm pretty sure I'd look at the dustless blasting you see advertised on Motortrend. Set your hours, be selective about jobs, and maybe even wrangle a municipal contract cleaning buildings, trucks, bridges.
I think I'd like that.

I wish him well! The problem is, the weeks even months it takes to build an accurate model ship from scratch doesn't translate to a lot of $$ per hour. There's no instant gratification, and the clients willing to pay for a long commission are pretty illusive.

Hollywood ???

I know of a guy (from other forums and YT) who is a real boatbuilder who also builds "miniatures" (some of which are fairly large) for movie productions. Not sure of his name, but he built and has sailed for decades the junk-rigged Spray replica Bertie.

My last house, my neighbor allegedly built props for movies. I remember that he put up a table on my property (front yard, yet!) to paint a ship model that he had built. I asked him what he thought he was doing, and got some a-hole response. I turned on the sprinklers.

Nothing as prominent as Hollywood. Just repairing models for a local nautical antique dealer, and an occasional commission for a restaurant, or interior decorator. It doesn't pay well, but keeps an old man busy.

I like that idea, but before I paid their prices, I would research the equipment, and consider assembling my own. I have done enough blasting to know that a lot of it is trial and error to get the equipment tuned in.

I have been watching YT videos on the subject and I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night, so I am an expert.

No BS, I like the idea.

Re: Part time job ideas

The dustless blasting is no joke. My brothers old boss at the hot rod shop went into a side business with another guy doing the dustless blasting. They had two set ups, one that was on a large trailer and had everything to go with you and the other was a small portable one they could do doors or a hood at the shop with. It's been pretty successful, and once you get it figured out if your just blasting the rust off an old frame you can damn near do it in just a pair of boots and rain pants.

There are minor hockey teams in Everett (and Bellingham) that play in the BC Minor Hockey league. A couple of years we had them in our flight and had to head down for games.

I cant even remember the last time I was in Canada (at least 20 years). Now my passport is expired and I don't have an enhanced DL yet and I need one of those to even cross the border.

My brother has season tickets to the Everett minor league hockey team, the Silvertips. They are right on the glass so its kind of fun. I go once in a while, but its cold haha.
