Rear Light Fuel Filler?

Ok guys...it's me again! I hope someone can help! I know there was a thread on this a while back by HuggerCST and I love the idea! Putting the fuel filler behind the rear tail light and hinging it to swing down. Didnt think Id ever be doing anything like that so I didnt pay much attention. Welllllll things change! I have all the pics from HuggerCST's thread but cant tell if CST cut the inside of the stake pocket out (if you remove your light and look inthe hole left...the pocket is facing you) or just cut a hole in it and stuck the exhaust tubing through? Anyone else done this...or HuggerCST got anymore pics? I ordered a army surplus Blazer tank yesterday and am itching to get to work! Any pics or help would be greatly appreciated!!! I was gonna go with the side marker door but I think I like this one better!

Re: Rear Light Fuel Filler?

Here are a few pics, but I didn't get one of the area behind the light before I welded it up. I wish that I would have, but at that time I wasn't sure that it would work. I did have to cut the 1/4 inch tabs off of each side, and some of the stake pocket shown in pic 1. Keep in mind that I did have to use the tail light trim to cover the area of metal that I had to remove at the bottom for clearance. If you have any questions, just ask, and I'll do my best.

Thanks. Here's a few more. I also had to use LEDs to get rid of the bulb socket.

Re: Rear Light Fuel Filler?

i have a couple questions HuggerCST? what kind of filler mechanism is that, it is compact and cool, and what holds the door closed, is it held by magnet, screw, or spring loaded? that is one of if not the slickest setup for taillight fill i've seen yet.

Re: Rear Light Fuel Filler?

The filler is a marine deck filler that I modified. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...3&classNum=204
Since I did this another member(Bamm) found one that mounts at an angle, is much cheaper, and looks like it would work better, but I don't have any pics of it. Maybe he will see this and give us more info. I used a universal throttle spring (see the yellow arrows in the pics below) that is mounted at an angle so that it cams over and then holds it open, or closed. I think it needs a little more tension, but I haven't changed it yet. Thanks for the compliments.

Re: Rear Light Fuel Filler?

Hey, HuggerCST, that's some fine work! Does the fill work OK at 1 1/2" or does it burp back some? Did you add a vent tube to the nipple, or is it OK as is? If you had a do-over, would it be worth it to try to fit a 2" ? Thanks for your input, I can only aspire to that level of craftsmanship! My problem is that I am the worst mechanic I know, but the only one I use.

Re: Rear Light Fuel Filler?

I still don't have the truck on the road, so I haven't tried to fill it yet.(that will be the true test) I started with a 2" filler, but the working space is pretty tight, and my tank neck was 1 & 1/2", so I changed to the smaller one. I did add a vent tube to the filler with a 1/4" pipe elbow and some rubber fuel line going back to the tank. I still have to figure out what to use as a tank vent. Anybody know of a good one? I was planning to use a blazer tank, but it hangs a little low, and the filler comes out in the wrong place, so I've decided to get Fuelcellguy to build me one. If I was to do it again, I'd probably try a angled filler like Bamm's, and I will either find a stiffer spring, or I might add a magnetic latch to keep this one closed tight. I don't think it would come open, but as it is now, it may bounce a little, and I'm not sure how tough the LEDs are. My craftmanship leaves something to be desired, but I cover it up well.

Re: Rear Light Fuel Filler?

Hey guys. You know what I know as of right now. I bought my filler off ebay a few months ago and haven't progressed far enough on the truck to start the fab work on it. I'll be taking a lot of direction from Hugger and his work. I'll keep you posted but it's looking like 4-6 weeks before I get to that stage.........Jerry

Re: Rear Light Fuel Filler?

huggercst- your mod looks great. Wish I would have known about those LEDs when I did my tankfiller. mine is a little more clearance limited cause I worked with the stock light, and I also re-used the in-cab filler, just welded a few pieces of stainless together to get around the curve.

The tank I used is the brothers tank, and it had a vent on it. I wasn't sure if I would need it or not, and I use the truck weekly to haul stuff for my nursery, just with a bedliner hanging in there, haha.
But yeah, I needed to vent mine to not have to trickle fill it, so you might have to as well huggercst. Oh, what was your inspiration for out your fill there? Mine was the old bel-airs!

But yeah, I admire your craftmanship with the spring latch and clean fill area. I still need to finish boxing mine in!

Re: Rear Light Fuel Filler?

When it's on the road, splurge and go to a full-service station and tell 'em to "fill 'er up". Have a camera handy that can video their actions.

I remember when we'd get someone new at the station I worked at "back in the day", and a '56 or 57 Chevy came in for gas. A lot of FoMoCo's had them behind the license plate....and if the car had a Continental kit on it and you had to swing the spare out of the way, it got interesting.

Nice work, man. I like the LED's, too.

Hey everyone

Thanks for all the feed back on the fuel filler question. I really appreciate the willingness that you all have to share your Ideas, I hope that as this project continues that I will be able to add something to all of your great ideas. Again thanks, and I will be around to ask more questions. Great site, great people.

Re: Rear Light Fuel Filler?

One thing I would do differently is have the door hinge on top, that way you could easily use a magnet latch because the weight of the door would keep it down. Very nice mod.

It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
