shorty vs. long tube

I recently read a post about headers, people where having trouble with the clutch linkage getting in the way. I have a c20 with the graany 4 speed tranny with a 350 and I want to put headers on it. Could I get shorty headers and bolt them up to the stock cross over pipe. What is some pro and cons about shorty headers.

shorty headers make about the same HP as good rams horn manifolds

In my experience shortly headers don't make as much low end torque. Personally, I would rather run ram horns than shortys. A good set of ram horns can still be had for a relatively cheep price and I think they look great on these trucks and provide a more classic look.

If it’s any consolation I know a quite few people who don’t have clutch linkage issues with full length headers. I think the problem is easily fixed with a little tweak once the headers are installed. I had to do this when I installed the full length headers (3 inch collectors) on the truck in my sig -it’s a big block mounted in the I-6 position. With a small block in the V-8 position you should have even more room than I had to work with.

If you can run full length headers, they are by far superior for power production but it's probably more a matter of preference because you will probably not notice very much of a difference on the street.

I would doubt if you could buy shortys that would bolt right up to your crossover without a little bit of work but I could be mistaken. Someone correct me if I am wrong… Pete.

I am not sure if you are referring to my post about this or not.

I have hedman's headers.There full length 1 5/8th primary's into a 3inch collector.Yes I did have a little bit of clearance problems.

To fix it the first thing I did was bolt the clutch linkage like it was supposed to be with the header off and out of the the way.The put the header back on as good as I could and marked the area where it was hitting it.Then I took a hammer and hit that spot in.I only did it a little bit and suprisingly it cleared and works fine.

Just make sure you get the headers for a manual trans!I went from a 307 with ram horns to a similarly setup 350 with headers and the difference was huge.I could get a third gear scratch at 55mph!
