I am getting a rear ready to swap into my 68. I have new brakes going on and replacing the emergency brake cables. The new brake cables I got from a guy in a package deal with other parts have a tag on them that only says 6772. It looks like a part no but not sure. My question is the old cables have a spring at the brake end of the cable. The new one does not. The cable ends will not come off to add the spring. Is the spring no longer needed?

The ones I purchased had the spring on the end.

Some GM vehicles did not use a spring.

I would think the spring is required to keep tension on the cable.

Here is a pic of the original set up on a '72

I just rebuilt all my brake system and Rockauto had the best prices on the cables / parts AC Delco with the springs .

Yes, the parking brake lever and cross bar work together when the parking brake is applied. The cable return spring is the release spring for the lever and cross bar, very necessary because the mechanical sweep of the lever and cross bar is greater than the hydraulic movement of the wheel cylinder and return springs. LMC has them for $10 PN34-3836 or Classic Parts of America has them for $25
