Dana 60 carrier interchange?

My 68 has a 3.54 Dana 60 open and I’d like to get a locker. I’ve heard the ford and dodge lockers will fit but can’t find any hard evidence to confirm. Does anyone know?

TIA, Joe

Re: Dana 60 carrier interchange?

A Dana 60 is the same no matter what it is under. Now the width and whats out on the ends may vary but the middle is all the same. Here is a link to Mark Williams and it gives a good break down of Dana 60 parts.

Re: Dana 60 carrier interchange?

Good to know, thanks for info Jimmy.
I forgot to ask what spline our carriers are. I can pick up a complete ford/dodge 70 with posi for under $200 but see spline s from 16 to 35. Rather not pull and try to count one of my axles, call me lazy.

Thank you, Joe

Could be 30, but I had a 60 from roughly that year range and had 16....

Thank you, Joe

Re: Dana 60 carrier interchange?

that's the best way really. After all, inless you owned the truck since 68, anything could have been swapped out. There is a chart out there somewhere that has all the axle measurements, so you could potentially swap shafts from something else.

Re: Dana 60 carrier interchange?

When I rebuilt the 60 in my 68 it had the 30 spline shafts and a 16 spline pinion. I went with a gear change to 3.73s already had a power-loc. If I were to do it over I'd install a tru-trac

It is pretty easy to pull an axle on a full floater.

Re: Dana 60 carrier interchange?

you can upgrade to the larger 35 spline axles, and carrier for more strength but you may likely have to drill the housing out at the ends so they will fit.

I had a friend that worked at a company that had a lathe big enough to swing the entire axle housing....I did this to several D60s

Re: Dana 60 carrier interchange?

if open diff why not just get a powertrax locker unit ? they just replace the open diff spider gears . lots of the 4x4 guys run them in dana 60 fronts and they hold up good . then no re-setting of the gear pattern is required .
