Well I finished up the brake lines, hooked up a few more wires, filled up the radiator.
Then it was the moment of truth: firing up the engine. AND A BIG FAIL  I spent a little bit of time checking stuff, but a lot of things aren't getting power, so I'm thinking I am missing a couple of ground wires. It was getting late, so I went in for the night. |

The Good news: I think I figured out the problem. There is a connector under the steering column that I had unplugged to move some wires around while installing the clutch pedal. I had it "plugged in" but the bolt that holds it together wasn't tightened. So after I got it tightened up, I turned the key and my test light on the fuse block for where the starter relay goes lights up as well as the radio, guage panel, and blower turned on.
The Bad news: In the process of tracing down the problem I removed the drivers side fender and tore the fuse block open, so I ran out of time to put it all back together to get it started. I would have had it done, but I had to go on a "rescue mission" to get my in-laws from the side of the road when their car broke down. Hopefully tonight! |

I've been fighting the flu the last few days, but managed to get out to the shop for awhile tonight, and actually feel better getting up and moving rather than sitting around doing nothing.
Anyways, I measured for my wheels and tires, so I'll be ordering them tomorrow. I would like to have the larger backspacing of the 2 options so they don't stick out as much, but it looks like that won't work, cause it would be hitting the head of the steering linkage bolt. I can't remember if I posted it or not earlier, but I'm getting chrome 18x8.5 Raceline Renegade 8s with 285/75/18 Toyo All terrains. Kinda funny, cause on my 68 I have raceline wheels with toyo tires  I don't neccessarily love chrome wheels, but for a daily driver polished wheels will look like crap in no time (and I'm not polishing them every weekend) and I really don't care for black wheels that so many guys with big diesel trucks have. Hopefully the chrome will hold up well. I know the wheels on my 68 are nice quality, so I assume these wheels (and the chrome) will be equal quality. I also got the rear shocks installed tonight. I'm hoping to have it on the road next week, but we'll see about that. |

Finally got around to ordering wheels and tires today, and what do you know, the wheels are on back order for 1 to 2 months! I thought about trying to find a different wheel, but these are the ones I really would like, so I guess I'll be waiting a bit for those
In the mean time, I'll be able to roll my tires around the shop! And I will still be able to drive the truck on the 16" dodge wheel (if it doesn't snow or rain, cause there's not a whole lot of tread on them) |

I tried finding someone else with the Renegades and talk to this guy and basically it could be up to 6 months before more are on their way over here....so I cancelled my order for those
but I found some others that I think will also look nice:

So today I had a buddy come over to help me bleed the brakes, sounds easy enough. Well the first problem was one of the lines I bent up for the rear axle was leaking. I tried tightening and loosening it a few times, but it still leaked, so I bent up a new one. Let me tell you, using a socket in a vice as a bending tool is a heck of a lot quicker than one of those "fancy" bending tools.
So I got the rears to seal and bled them. On to the front: First the drivers side caliper's bleed screw was broken off. I tried using an easy out to remove it, but as expected (and as always happens) it broke off in the caliper. I've been down this road before and just went and got another caliper. So I get home from the parts store and bleed the drivers side. I move over to the passenger side and start to try to loosen the bleeder screw. Its tight, so I used a hammer to give my wrench a few light taps....and that bleed screw broke off! So back to the parts store for another new caliper. Got home and got that one put on and the system bled. 2 new calipers isn't neccessarily a bad thing, just a pain having to make two trips to the parts store. At least they had them in stock and they were <$30 each. BTW the pads and rotors look good, so I didn't mess with those. So the good news: the truck is now mobile.....if it could start. Damn POS battery won't hold a charge. |
