Two speed rear axle

So the other day my dad was telling me that he used to know a lady with an early 80s Chevy with a two speed rear axle on it. What would it take to install one on a 67-72 truck. I don't want to do it to my current truck but I would like to for future reference.

Re: Two speed rear axle

I would doubt that there is anything suitable. They are all going to be from much bigger trucks, which will cause wheel fitment issues. That's not even the biggest problem.
Gearing, that's the big one.
Since they are meant for big trucks, with tall tires, the gears are going to be pretty low. Useful?, not likely.

You would be better off with a gear vendors overdrive unit.....on the transmission end

Re: Two speed rear axle

International put one in 1 tons. I've only seen one,in a tow truck back around 79/80. Not sure what year the trucks was but a few years older than that,at least.
