Factory Truck height ?

I bought a used 4 door silverado 2 wheel drive, and it seems reall tall for a 2 whd truck. When I look at other 4 whd trucks around town it looks the same height. I was just wondering if some one could tell me the measurement from the ground to the bottom center Of the front and rear fenders thanks.

Re: Factory Truck height ?

I will measure mine when I get home this evening and give you exact, but I think it was almost 38 in the front and 40 in the back.

Re: Factory Truck height ?

REMEMBER the old FORD thing. Henry made all of the cars the same and to save money he could sell the parts easily for each and every car.

Look at GM and see that the trucks all set about the same height, no matter 2WD or 4WD, just imagine if you order a 4X4 and the manufacturer has a bunch of 2WDs on the line. Just take the front end out and slide a front axle and a transfer case in and guess what a 4X4 is now completed. it just appears that the GM boys have taken Ford's process and are now using it.

Re: Factory Truck height ?

GM uses the same suspension in both 2 and 4WD pickups now. The only difference in ride height is in the tires the factory puts on.

Re: Factory Truck height ?

My rambling commentary on 2wd vs 4wd, not that it adds anything to your thread but I think it's interesting where the market has gone. People used to see the reasoning behind buying 2wd trucks such as cost vs. benefit, climate, maintenance, gas mileage, etc. These days most common folk (not truck people like ourselves) don't think a truck is a truck unless it is 4wd. I think that besides the suspensions being identical on GMT900 (front coil-over) the similarity is driven by consumer demand. If you took a poll of most new chevy owners many would admit they bought 2wd's only because it's cheaper not because they really wanted it, like us. Heck, you can get Z71 suspension (and stickers) on a 2wd today. That's the "so my neighbor wouldn't know I don't have a real truck" package LOL.

Can't tell you how many times I have gotten flippant remarks about my 2wd trucks. I've had the occassion to use 4wd ONCE in the last 5 years and I wouldn't have needed it if my tires were in better shape (snow). GM has made 4wd's more comfortable and reliable though so I can understand the mentality. Heck, my next new truck might be a lowered 4wd LOL.

Re: Factory Truck height ?

I agree. I live just outside Buffalo, NY. The mentality here is that a 4X4 is an absolute necessity. Ive had them in the past but I rarely used 4wd unless I was out playing in the mud (which I outgrew a long time ago). I had 4wd trailblazers for 6 years before I bought my silverado. When truck shopping in 2010 I thought "why should I spend and extra $2-3K ($40-$60 more each payment) to have 4wd when I only used it 4 times in the last 6 years?" So instead of getting a 4X4 "plain jane", I got a 2wd with power windows, keyless entry, LS chrome pkg, carpet and G80 locker. The only times the western New York snow gave me problems with my 2wd truck, that locking diff kept me out of trouble. For me, a 2wd is all I need for what I do with my truck.
