Thanks! The 194 bumps the compression from 8:1 to 9:1(roughly). I believe the valves are the same as the 250(i measured them on the 194, but its been a month and i forgot the sizes). One thing with it is it doesnt have a spot for the temp gauge. Had to put it in the thermostat housing.

As I work my engines pretty hard and want them to last decades at the same time , I typically build them with low CR and big valves so they breathe well and run cool , you can work 'em mighty hard and they don't break , overheat , knock or diesel / ping on pump gas either .

FWIW , I'm using an original unrestored 1977 Nova GM HEI setup (the one with separate ignition coil) on my clapped out 250 CID engine and it never misses on the rare occasion I run it up to 5,000 RPM's .

The linked one looks nice and @ $60 is a steal but maybe not necessary ? .
Pretty sure the 194-230-250-292 all used the same valve size of 1.72 intake 1.50 exhaust. Course when you take a 194 head and put bigger valves in it wouldn't matter. On a 194 head I'm pretty sure chamber relief is a must for the 1.94 valve grind. It was recommended for the 292 head. Larry aka Twisted 6 would know for sure. My old 292 in my 66 would do 5k. lol Though I would only do it for a really short time. I like that HEI. Though after some more research that isn't the exact one I have. Mine is from Speedmaster and that one is skip white. This one has a 50k coil and mine has a 65k coil. Though the difference I really don't think matters that much. Both are red anyhow. Yuck. haha

Oneupmanship used to be a sport. Tell you what, since it's 44 grand cheaper I'll take one....for 500. You can ship em COD.

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

Here's a few pics of my 250 in my '71 with a '79 Stepside bed...

1- Standing next to the engine bolting up the transmission. Just another cool benefit!

2- The completed engine with P/S and AC

3- Does anyone else have a spare valve cover with the top cut out of it for setting the valves with no oil splatter?

4- My new project is a '79 stepside with this integrated head six that runs really solid also with P/S and AC. Since the brackets are different for those rare items from the conventional head, I am going to run the integrated heads... I am going to swap the Saginaw three speed for the TH 350 next.

Question... Do you have to use that multilevel integrated head valve cover? I hate the way it looks. Can I use one of those tiny air cleaners and a classic 250 valve cover or are they different?

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

I have an L6 valve cover I've been meaning to cut out for a valve-adjust piece, just haven't needed it yet.
Nice 250. What carb is on that Offy intake?
I have never messed with the integrated heads, always been steered away. I hear the later blocks will take an earlier head ['60s + '70s].

Sorry, Nate! I'm going to pass on your invitation. I like retired life too much. I get up when I want to, play with my toys on most days and sometimes do something foolish....like paint the house.

But I do appreciate looking at a fine piece of machinery and, well, you know the rest!

I got mine from Louisville shipped to SoCal for $1200 with less than 10K Miles on it.

The down side is they chopped up the wiring harness with a sawsall, but I didn't need much of it anyway.

That's a regular 2BBL from a V-8 with an adapter plate. I was on a budget and just used what I had available. It ran fine and I never got around to putting a Holly 390 on it which was the plan. I am going to keep this new one stock as far as carburation goes. I'll probably do a marine or RV cam and that's it when I dig into it. for now if it ain't broke, I'll focus on other stuff the truck needs

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

My air cleaner assembly is the factory oil bath type. Not many of them around. The offset filter style are hard to find also. The non offset filter type can be found on the for sale section or a local junkyard. I have 2 I found in the Baton Rouge area junkyards over the years. Think I am gunna keep em. Getting harder to find.

Post a wanted ad in the for sale section. I'm sure someone will pop up with one.

On point #3. I would not use that method. You can buy plastic oil stoppers that clip onto the rocker arms. I have bee using these for years and you get no mess. You also get better access to the valve assemble and you are not fighting the cut opening. The clips are not expensive and will also fit small block Chevy rockers as well.

I bought one of those Ebay distributors [on your recommendation] when my Pertronix II took a dive, but never used it. I went back to points, since it seems I'd have to convert from EVR and OEM alternator to new internally-regulated alternator, since the EVRs tend to spike the modules at higher RPM.
I may yet go to the HEI, if I update the alternator -- probably around October, since this old Tank still has to pass smog emissions in AZ.
Could you post the p/n for the DUI unit? And give us a review of how well it works.
Points work great -- if you remember to change them twice a year and haven't donated your dwell meter to the Smithsonian. I had a backlog of nos L6 ignition stuff.

Will do, The ebay one always performed flawlessly, and I never had issues with it. I'm getting the DUI because I want the best of everything for my new 292. The old one was worn out so I spent as little as possible. lol But, if that ebay dizzy ever takes a dive I can upgrade it with DUI parts I believe. Here's the link to the dui:

Thanks. Link is bookmarked.
I understand your aesthetic concern for color-coordinated distributors and engine parts, but with a Chevy Engine Orange plant, Mallory Red, Delco Black or Accel Tan are not too disruptive for cap colors.
By going retro on the points system, I AM using USA parts. Also kept the same wires, just regapped the plugs back to .035.

That's an awfully small motor for a heavy truck. Putting out maybe 80 hp running 110 octane. You may be able to wake it up with some boost, but even then a 230 or 250 would walk away from it naturally aspirated.

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

You have to change the oil pan, oil pump and I don't know what else. The sump is on the front. It wouldn't be worth the effort even if they gave it to you.
