No i'm not sure i will have to check the numbers The truck is a 62 and Levi's dad said it was a 292 but i guess i'll have to check . Is there some thing that would stand out to tell them apart without numbers? Bob

That's definitely NOT a 292. It's either a 235 or 261! That won't drop in the '67-72 trucks without modifications to the engine brackets.

Re: 11-9-08 Road Trip (pictures)

i think all 292's had spin on filters where the fuel pump is located on this engine. the placement of the distributor, style of the valve cover and the remote oil filter are giveaways. a 261 will have "captains bars". check this link...

You can absolutely use a TH350 or TH400 behind the 250/292. They'll bolt right up! However, the TH400 uses up much more HP than the TH350 and the latter will be just fine, even behind the torque of a 292.
Also, stick with a 3.73 gear or so out back as a 3.08 will make the truck into a dog and your mileage won't increase unless you're using it 90% of the time on the highway.

Re: 11-9-08 Road Trip (pictures)

Thanks for the info Brad planning on either a 3:73 or4:11 rear and planning on a 350th tranny . It is my 12yr old daughter's truck so I have about 3yrs to get it done. I wish I knew more about spotting what kind of 6 this was !! Oh well it was still a good day and I saved it from the scrapper !!! I will find it a new home . Sounds like a lot of work to make this one work. At least I have a 250 in the 1/2 ton frame I will be using Thank you !! Bob

Re: 11-9-08 Road Trip (pictures)

i was hoping it was since it had a remote oil filter. 235's didnt come standard with them. 261 is a tough motor. lets figure out how to get it in your truck
here is my 261 in the truck and after getting rebuilt...

bob... either way, it was all fun,and now you can sell the wrong engine. It's probably worth more than the engine you thought you had.

Re: 11-9-08 Road Trip (pictures)

wow, i feel bad about this one. i thought it was a 292 as well and was really relying on my dad telling me it was a 292. Bob, i'll give you a ring tomorrow and figure out what needs to be done to make things square. Don't feel like you're stuck with that engine. I should of pulled the casting number off it before we went through all that work to pull it.

and on that note, damn that was a b!tch to pull that thing. One stinkin' bolt hung the whole thing up.

Don't feel bad . Nobody's fault just lack of knowledge on my part . I put it on c/l so we will see where it goes. I'm not mad at you or in no way hold you responsible for this . These things happen I will talk to ya later , Bob

I bet it will all work out in the end.... I think I would have tried to use it. I don't know a lot about 6's but I can't believe it would be that difficult to get it installed...

Re: 11-9-08 Road Trip (pictures)

Man that stinks! I did the exact same thing years ago. I went to buy a 400 buick and I pulled it out of the junk yard in the winter several hours north of our place. When I took it out of the truck I decided to remove the intake. Then I noticed "350" casted into the intake after I scraped the gunk from the back of the engine. I ate that one. LOL Either way, I'm sure it will work out.

Re: 11-9-08 Road Trip (pictures)

It's all good here !! I 'm gonna use the 250 change the intake exhaust and probably the cam for a little lumpy one ! Untill I figure out what to do with it the 261 is gonna be cool garage art !! It looks monsterous on the engine stand in the corner !! It was a good day meeting Levi's parents and brother and watching Levi's get his butt kicked by a bell housing bolt Bob

Not as easy as the one I got from you it already fits in the frame it came in !! I will fix it and use it !! Not to worry the 261 will go to a good home sooner or later. That's better than the scrapper!! Bob
