1968 c 30

Restoring my '68 with a 292

I need advice on a number of issues

1. Having trouble finding an exhaust manifold

2. Replacing the intake manifold with Offenhauser but which is best, open square or individual holes for each barrel?

3. Brakes I want to upgrade to disc but cant find a kit that has eight lug.

4. Cab perches are rusted out. Does anyone reman those or do I have to make them myself?

You can get a header or look for one used.I don`t think they are made new.I haven`t looked at catalogs.
I don`t think you`ll see much difference in an open plenum or the other unless you did alot of other motor work.Will you be using a 4bbl?I`d want to run a quadra jet if there`s a spread bore intake.
Your best bet for disc brakes is buy all the parts off a`71 or newer 1 ton.You can swap the entire a-frame assembly if you want or at the ball joints and tie rods.
Are the cab mounts on the frame rusted?You`d have to find them used.

Thanks special K (funny) Thats a great idea for the front end. Thanks! The cab perch holes have been enlarged by rusting out. My body guy says he will weld a large washer onto the perch as the rest of the structure is in good shape.
I am excited about this project. I have restored a number of tractor but never a truck. I will post pics when I can but I was not able to get my computer to shrink the jpegs.

1. What manifold are you planning to use? Cheap headers are for sale in JC whitney or spend the $$ and go with Clifford headers.

2. Offy w/1 opening, and a 500cfm eldebrock 4 bl.

3. What S-K said.

4. Which cab perches, front or back or all 4? they should be the same as a 3/4 ton but we would need to see them.

5. What program are you using to veiw your photos with?

On my 68 3/4, I took the front end parts of of a '71. LMC sells 8 lug front disc brakes for 3/4 tons but not sure for the 1 tons.

When you steal parts of another, make sure you get all the brake lines too as well as the p.valve.

The ball joints have to be used from the 71 or later cause there is a slight diffence in sizes. It's been a while so I don't remember what it is.

My C30 was converted before I bought it. But I agree with the previous poster that the parts are from any '71+ 1-ton truck. It may be hard to find an entire kit, per se, so you may have to piece it together. I just replaced the rubber brake lines that go between the frame and caliper on my truck and I just browsed the Advance Auto Parts website, entering C30 trucks, year by year, until I saw an exact match for the picture and specs of my brake line, and then I tried a year earlier and a year later. I found the same brake line for a cheaper price in a different year, so I went with that one. I don't remember the details beyond that, so do your own homework.

Once you do piece it together, be sure to document the parts you used so that replacement parts will be easy to source. Also, be sure to try several different years, because I have noticed subtle differences between years that may jack up the price of a part. Don't be afraid to substitute different years to get the setup you need. And get used to looking up specs for a part, since the part number my change between years, because a small spec changed (like going from 10,000 to 11,000 GVWR, etc).

I also agree that LMC Truck is awesome for parts. That's where I got all of the parts to restore my cab, interior and exterior. If you order $1000 worth of parts from them, no matter how big, shipping is free. Since I needed a hood, I made sure to go above $1000, and that saved a boat load on shipping! It was like getting free parts instead of paying the huge shipping charge for a hood. A few weeks later, they sent me a personalized thank you letter that was signed by their staff. I thought this was a nice touch. So I highly recommend them for a source for parts.

I don't recall seeing 8-lug stuff in their catalog. Lots of 5 and 6 lug, and they specialize in 1/2 to 3/4-ton but not much 1-ton stuff. The cab parts are the same. The chassis stuff is where the 1-ton stuff becomes harder to find.

I've always thought if you got a regular disc kit, you could just buy 8-lug discs and it would work fine.

Thanks to everyone who replied! I know I've come to the right place. I've got more information today then several days of "research" I will work on the photos. My PC just recovered from a serious virus and will probably need to be replaced.

I am working on the front brakes for a '72 one ton Dually Flatbed right now, today, as a I type. Haha! Here is my advice if it a Dually, if not disregard my advice, as I don't know if it is correct for Single Rear Wheels. Finding 71-72 DUALLY front rotors is expensive and very hard (Single rear wheel they have, not Dually). I searched for quite a while. The final solution that was suggested to me and I sought out was to use the front spindles, rotors, brake lines and calipers of a 74 + Dually truck.I found a parts truck on Craigslist, and bought a fairly new setup off a '79 Dually. They literally bolt right up. THey use the same ball joints, and tie rods. You do have use the newer brake lines though. This is the easiest way to do the swap. I use Rockauto.com to look up part numbers and cross reference. When you look for the part, say a '79 dually upper ball joint, when you click on the part, there will be a picture and a little clicky that says info. click that an it will show you all the years and vehicles that part fits. THis has made cross referencing a snap and made it really easy to find the correct parts.
I hope this helps you a little.

Shes not dually. Wish she was. I have already run into some problems with a search for a '71 + front end. The two salvage yards I go to are EMPTY. All steel is going overseas!! I have a 1985 F#$%d 150 that I am parting out maybe someone who doesn't know better will trade for a set Chevy wheels and a's

You can use C/20 brakes on that.The coild are the only difference up front.Just make sure you get the complete brake set-up to the master cylinder.
Looks like your flatbed has a GM bed on it.

Wat you mean colid?
The K20 I bought from a guy for one dollar. He couldn't get it started and was moving. At first I couldn't figure out what the problem was. Had spark and fuel. At one point I walked back to the front of the truck after trying to start it and saw the distributer drop. It had come loose and everytime it was cranked it kicked it out. Reset, it checked timing and she fire right up.
