I'm in the process of converting my non-A/C truck to A/C and I need to know... the spring that holds the flap/door in the cowl open, one end of the spring attaches to the flap/door, where does the other end attach to? A description and dimensions, or better yet... pics would help

I think the spring is wrapped around the shaft the vent piviots on.

That pic did help some but it is too blurry. I was hoping to get an actual pic of one in a truck, so that I could see what it looks like installed.

I'm thinking of doing the same conversion. Is there anything extremely difficult in this swap? I thought I saw in a truck at the junk yard there was a hole and flap under the outside cowl that connected to the A.C. system somehow. Have you run into any problems? Sorry to hijack your post, but you seem like the right person to ask

It seems that I was unclear as to which spring I ment... From the diagrams above I need pics or a description & dimensions of the spring attachment for the outer cowl plenum valve door spring.
Thanks all with the other pics, those too are a help.

On my 71 with factory a/c there is not a spring to return the flap to the open position.
This vent is normaly open with no vacumn applied. When the vacumn auctuator is installed it will hold the door open at its rest (no vacumn applied) . When vacumn is applied the door will shut.
Inside the cowl area there is no return spring attached to return the vent to the open position.
The only spring inside the cowl is the one around the pin which points to the inside of the cab. This is sping loaded pin which enables you to install and remove the flap within the cowl.
It kinda looks like a sping you would see inside a ball point pen.

On the two AC cabs that we have there is an extension spring that hooks to the eyelet on the door and onto the cowl in a small hole. It is pretty straight forward, but I can mock it up as both cabs are being worked on. So if you still need a picture, let me know.

Jim, If I could still get a picture of the small hole in the cowl so that I know exactly where to drill the hole in the cowl on my truck, that would be a great help.

Here you go!

The hole is 3/16 in diameter and 1 1/8" from the windshield wiper hole.

Hutch brought up a good point on the vacuum actuator as they are spring loaded. I only know that the two trucks with air had the remains of a spring hanging off of the door on one and a good spring on the other. I plan on hooking the springs up when we put them together. Both of the vehicles are 72's
