I have a 67 1/2 ton 4x4 that I would like to put a steering box from a 70 1/2 ton chevy pickup. Will this adapter plate work for the 4x4?

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

As far as I know mine will work on your '67 4x4. I have sold a few to guys that wanted them for the '67 & '68 4x4's and I haven't heard of any issues with using them in that application.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

Hello Captain Fab. I have a 65 c10 2 wd that I am looking to upgrade to power steering. I see your adapter plates I think I need one of these. I was also wondering if you can give me any info on the rest of the parts needed or where is the best place to find parts for the switch. Thank you...

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

You're going to need a '69-'87 truck based (Pickup, Suburban, 2wd Blazer) power steering box from a 2wd C10, C20 or C30. You will also need a pitman arm and likely a new coupler (rag joint) to the steering column. Then you will need a power steering pump with brackets, pulleys and hoses that will work with whatever engine you are running. If possible it is a good idea to get the box and pump from the same donor truck. If you want to get new parts, just purchase them from your local auto parts supplier. Although you will need to either pay the core charges, or come up with them.

If the 67-68 frame is completely flat, as in my case, do I need just some 1/4" spacers or the bracket. I have a 68 4x4 with the 3 bolt manual gear. Any help would be great.

The '67 & '68 2wd's are the ones that you only need 1/4" spacers. The '67 & '68 4wd's need an adapter plate. I have sold a few of these to guys with '67 and '68 4x4's. Let me know if you would like one.

With mine you don't need to drill out any threaded holes on the steering box. All four of the steering box bolts go thru the frame. Also there is no inner plate to deal with. I don't feel it is necessary for a 2 wheel drive truck. I've had this same plate on my '66 Suburban since 1993 and put just over 120,000 miles on it with no issues. When I've installed these, I stitch weld the plate to the frame for a little added strength. This isn't absolutely necessary though, since there are four bolts securing it to the frame. The price for this bracket is $50.00 plus $10.00 for insured shipping in the USA. Included is the bracket as shown and four grade 8 bolts and lock washers.
do you still have these

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

Quick question;

The Power Steering unit is coming off a 79 4x4 Suburb.
From my searching these forums, it appears it'll work for my 66 with your adapter plate, but I'll need to get a Pitman arm off a 2wd, correct?

Thanks,
Robert

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

The 4x4 boxes are the same box as the 2wd boxes, but the sector shaft (output shaft) is different. Consequently the 2wd pitman arm will not fit onto a 4x4 box.

I replied to your PM. Let me know what you think.

That stinks! :argh:

I still want your bracket. I originally didn't plan on converting to power steering until spring/summer, but since my 66 pitman arm is shot, I figured I might as well do the upgrade now.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

I found this forum and thread in Google a while back and finally installed the bracket:

I knew I needed it because only three bolts were holding my steering box on the frame and the spacers were lug nuts. The box was loose, almost falling off, and the frame had a slight crack. The kit mounted the box almost 1.5 inches further back than where it was hacked on. The tie rod is very close to the crossmember, perhaps less than 1/4 inch. That made me second guess my measurements, but it all seems to be OK. Great instructions.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

Wow, it looks like the PO was a little drill happy. I'm glad to hear you got that fixed correctly.....looks good. It'll be much safer now. The adapter plates now come with a template that works better for postioning the adapter plate.
