What to look for in a metal detector?

Am curious what to look for in a metal detector. Thought it might be fun to run one along excavated dirt associated with city improvement projects and other locations next summer to chase old coins.

I have had a Garrett Groundhog detector since 1982 or '83. Still works as good as it did when I bought it. When I lose something working on the trucks outside I drag it out and promptly find it....

I have found a lot of coins and stuff with it but it never made me rich...

Re: What to look for in a metal detector?

Good suggestions guys. Thanks.

It’s funny. What got me on this recent kick was losing an OE clamp for a power steering pressure hose in my grass. I was cleaning some fasteners and things on A bench grinder outside and the clamp broke loose and rocketed out onto the lawn never to be seen again.

If your not looking for a fancy one,
Harbor Freight has this one.

I got one. Its just ( okay).
You kinda got to practice with it to learn the tones and settings.
There are several people on u tube that cover these detectors.

Here's one of the video's

I think the metal detector would keep it useable. The blade could toss it even fartherand make it unuseable.....

Re: What to look for in a metal detector?

I have an old Radio Shack detector that I have had for years. I can't endorse it, but it's the one I have.

I have and old Ipod that I sometimes carry in my shirt pocket. I was bush hogging one day a couple of years ago, and while making a u turn, the suicide knob on the steering wheel caught the cord and sent the Ipod flying.

I searched, but gave up.

I couple of weeks later, while on a road trip with my in laws, I mentioned the event to my BIL. He asked why I didn't use a metal detector. DUH.

When we got home, I went back to the spot in the pasture, and it took me about 60 seconds to find the Ipod. It had landed such that the rain hadn't affected it at all.
