Is this a board member's truck?

This happened west of me yesterday. Per the CHP site, the driver was pulled from the truck with minor injuries. Link to the story: https://krcrtv.com/news/local/vegeta...ear-cedar-flat

Re: Is this a board member's truck?

At least they got the driver out. Looks like the truck caught fire by looking at the tires.

Re: Is this a board member's truck?

Yes, it flipped over and caught fire. Not sure what caused it to overturn though. Last I heard, the resulting wildfire is about 100 acres in some terribly rugged terrain.

Must've dragged the driver out through the driver's side door. What a mess. Was the driver a midget, or something? That looks like certain death, collapsed like that.

Re: Is this a board member's truck?

Stocker, that must be the 299, right? Pretty treacherous highway, I remember the sales manager from Trinity River Lumber got run off the same road by a drunk. Flipped his truck and messed him up pretty bad. It's a nice scenic drive from there to Eureka, but definitely need to stay aware. Not to mention the logging trucks, some of those guys are maniacs.

Re: Is this a board member's truck?

.
Heat from the fire could have caused it to collapse. Wondering why it went inverted though.

Would like to hear The Rest of the Story.

Yes, it's 299 where it crosses the Trinity River at Cedar Flat (between Weaverville and Willow Creek). This wreck was on a relatively straight section of highway and I don't know what caused it. If I find out, I'll post it here.

EDIT: Found another pic of the scene. You can see the helo with a full dip bucket lifting up from the river.

Re: Is this a board member's truck?

Hearing all these names of all these places brings back memories of the time I spent in that area. I had a gal give me a ride in her old Chevy on 299 from somewhere in the mountains to Arcata. She was driving a lot faster than I would have. I was glad to make it out of the mountains

I hate to play hindsight detective, but the driver's story sounds to me like the BS you make up when you screwed up doing what you shouldn't be doing. "Lost control, tried to hit brakes but foot slipped onto gas pedal". I dunno. Let's go back to the "lost control" part. Explain how that came to be.

Exactly. Like what were you REALLY doing when you lost control of the vehicle?

Re: Is this a board member's truck?

Wonder if the driver was dodging rocks and lost it or didn't dodge one and it flipped the truck? Or did those show up due to fire or fire fighting efforts?

In any case, good that the driver got out.

Re: Is this a board member's truck?

I figure he probably ran off the road back where the rescue vehicle is sitting (or farther), ran up the bank, knocking rocks loose, and rolled it. I wonder if it had a rear gas tank and thatr got ruptured, leaving a trail of gas. It's all burnt up behind the truck and only the rear of the truck is burnt

If I had to guess, distraction or inattention caused him to leave the road..... then everything went bad in a hurry.

It's not a bad highway, but it does require your attention. There are few (if any) runoff areas. If you stay between the lines, you're almost always okay.
Watch for rocks, critters, and FTs (*Friendly* Tourists). I have easily logged a few thousand trips on that road, mostly at the wheel of a bucket truck.

Re: Is this a board member's truck?

I was curious even more ,so looked up the accident on some other site ,,and this is what some people had to say about the wreck

Flat tire fire. Stepped on the brake to slllip on the gas to infiiiiiiiiiinaty??? Must have been some serious nitrous charged gas leaking horsepower!

I wish the fellow well. My guess is that losing his valuable classic truck will hurt him more than his injuries.

I was talking to someone who was there soon after the accident (before responders) and apparently the man was going on and on about his truck and not really concerned about himself. Probably in a state of shock.
Yet again, a fire explodes that could have maybe been prevented by the carrying of a fire-extinguisher. We should all carry them in our vehicles. If it’s like my beat up old 65′ truck, carry a shovel too. Glad he wasn’t hurt. Hope the wind doesn’t change.

Finally, can we get these fuel guzzling, pollution spewing, fire starting ancient wrecks off the road? The vehicles I mean. Nostalgia ain’t pretty.

Thumbs up Re: Is this a board member's truck?

I'll be darned, Larry, you found a pic of my downtown! That wreck was about 45 minutes west of town. Believe it or not, we've live here nearly 45 years and I have never set foot inside the Diggins.

I sat in some bar in town in, I think, '83 when I was on a visiting trip for a wedding up north in Scotia. Might have been that place. I think we stayed over somewhere and were out for the evening
