Best 15" 60 series tires

My friend asked me who makes the best 15's, and all I remembered was BFG's were my favorite.

Is this still true or is there another company that works better? Especially in the rain.

My friend is in Washington state, and is looking at a 94 Silverado 1500 extended cab. It looks to have a 3/5 with 20's, and my friend will go back 15's. He is not sure how much he wants to spend on a new to him vehicle, and this one will be available in a couple months when the owner retires.

Cooper Cobras on my 15" ralleys. Goodrich TAs were too pricey for me.

Get on Walmart.com, plug in the tire size you are looking for. THey have a boat load of brands available. IF they don't have what you want, they will ship what you want, to your store, for free...

I don't know what line of performance tires that Michelin and Goodyear have for 15" stuff these days??? Steeve???

I like Firestone Indy 500's. Grippy. Full thread width, nice square edges.
Cooper Cobras, next in line. Also full width thread.
BFG T/A- don't like them. Worse since they increased the threadwear rating (ie:rubber too hard, less grab). Narrower thread for the same size vs the cooper and firestones.

Re: Best 15" 60 series tires

The local tire shop told me they were having problems with BFG's. He said they were not what they used to be and did not recommend them. I was talking to him about a vibration I was trying to track down. I have 255-70 BFG's

This is my experience also.

Last several sets of 275/60s I bought were coopers.

BFG radial t/a's were absolute trash for traction. Haven't bought a set in at least 15yrs though so who knows these days.

This was my situation. I wanted BFGs but could not due to cost. Amazon had the best price on Coopers.

While I don't run OP size, I have recently started running Firestone Indy 500...basically due to price and availability. So far they are fantastic ( 255/35-18 ).

Re: Best 15" 60 series tires

Things change. BFG is owned by Michelin so I would think it is a better product but not necessarily so now days. Of the 5 larger tire stores in our town 4 don't stock BFG or Michelin anymore. They can get them but they are not stocking them. I just bought a set of Michelin for my Yukon and they had to get them over night.
I have used Cooper Cobras for several years and have absolutely no problem with them. The Michelins replaced Cooper Discoverers which I did not like at all.
I think the Cobras are what the BFG Radial T/A used to be.

Re: Best 15" 60 series tires

Even Cooper ain't what it used to be. My original Cooper Cobras I got back in the early 90's, maybe even late 80's. They had a thread wear rating of 250 with a non-diagonal thread pattern. Loved that tire. When they went to that diagonal thread pattern sometime in the 90's the threadwear went up (400 on the set I got) their rain manners and standing start traction suffered for it. Still worlds better then the BFG T/As. That said, Cooper has again played around with the tire and got it more dialed in. But I want the days of an affordable grippy tire that people complain about thread life about. =-)
Agreed on the Discovers, they used to be my goto truck tire. Now I have a lot of love for Hankooks. At least until they screw up things by trying to cater to the long life crowd. =-)

Re: Best 15" 60 series tires

I put a 275/60-15 Hankook on the back of my LS powered S10 and they seem to hook up a lot better than the BFG's I had before. I don't know about Rain driving as it isn't much fun in a down pour rain. Can't blame tires I think it's heavy right foot and light weight truck problem!

They DO change. I have a friend in the tire business. He mentioned this, years ago. I have not been in contact with him, for quite a while, though.

About 20 years ago, Cooper and Goodyear were the ONLY tires made in America, not sure about now.

I hope to be in the market for some tires for my 67 C10, here soon. I will call him, at that time.

Re: Best 15" 60 series tires

My experience with Goodyear is they are good for a year. With BF Goodrich they are good at making BF rich.

My go to tire is Michelin but those are changing too. Used to be long lasting, like 75,000 but the set I bought for our 2014 Impala were "estimated" for only 45,000.

But they do make it handle like a Camaro.

Re: Best 15" 60 series tires

Have Cooper Cobras on my '71 Chevelle and altho don't daily drive it I do like the look of them. 225/70/15s on 7'' rallys for the front and 255/60/15s on 8'' rallys on the back. Use the shallow disc brake caps instead of the normal rally derby style caps.

For my '71 4x4 running Hercules 31-10.50-15s on 8'' rallys with 3'' trim rings.

Both car and truck have the white letters out which I prefer.

Re: Best 15" 60 series tires

I ran BFG's on most stuff back in the day. For just driving around I never had an issue. If I wanted better traction, I sought tires more specific to the type of driving planned & didn't expect much lifespan.

BFG has priced themselves out for normal driving stuff for me. I went w/the Cooper Cobras (15") on the last project because they looked decent enough & were better priced. Seem ok so far but the car is just a driver that happens to be a classic.

Dually runs 16" Michelins (LT truck up front; load rated out back).
64 has Coker brand 'Silvertowns' out back @ the moment (16" BFG Radial T/A tread) & some generic 15" fronts w/a similar appearing tread & decent looking sidewall.

Used to love my Cornell Super sport L60's back in the 80's. I could get several weeks out of them before they melted from the abuse PepBoys always had great deals on them for us teenagers

Re: Best 15" 60 series tires

One of my younger brothers used to street race quite a bit. He got take-offs for cheap at the tire store, usually Bridgestones. Some Fridays he'd buy a pair and then come in Saturday for another pair. Burned 'em clean up. But he'd made enough money Friday night to more than pay for the tires. He had a '64 Nova wagon with a 350/400/Ford 9". That thing was fast, and quick.
