Re: HF jack stand recall

So basically I'm out several jack stands now, and instead of refunding my money so I can go buy some new ones, HF gives me a sh*tty gift card to HF. WTF. Not happy. I guess it serves me right for buying HF stuff to begin with.

they did you a favor

here's a few links to some leads on decent stands http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...5&postcount=19

I personally have a full set of OTC in my garage and a pair of those craftsmans mentioned in one of those articles.. they came with a jack I used to carry offroad but didn't realize they're actually decent rated stands

Gray manufacturing also make great stands in USA

some of the premium brands are making more and more overseas so you have to check each product..

for something so safety critical, I highly recommend a set of decent well made stands.. even if made overseas, most major reputable brands hold higher quality control standards than budget brand box stores like hf..

skin your knuckles on busted hf ratchets and wrenches but do yourself a favor and pass on their safety items..

good luck!

Re: HF jack stand recall

I would never get under my truck if it was held up with HF jackstands. I use their stuff now and then for disposable items. I kick myself when the crud from there backfires so I keep it to a minimum.

Re: HF jack stand recall

I just returned 2 sets of 3 ton and 1 set of 6 ton jack stands. I too got a gift card. They do not have any alternatives right now so I am out 6 stands.

I bought a set of ramps that I have been looking at for a while to get me through. Will go over to Northern Tool or Tractor Supply for replacements. I worry they all come from the same place in China.

The only ones I have left are a set from Craftsman and they came with a hydraulic jack I bought 22 years ago. Figure they are still safe.

The last set I bought were 6 ton double locking. Has a pin you can put in also to hold it up to keep it in place. Got mine from amazon. Got 4 of them holding my 59 in the air as I work on it really like them.

Re: HF jack stand recall

Well,
Not here to bash HF, had a Pittsburg jack last me over 10 years. Have a old Craftsman jack that is still in use. I have worked with Jackstands to include inspecting them for over 20 years. Most of my military career we only had ratchet style stands and there were was only one time I can remember that they had to be recalled. I hope that I had something to do with the HF recall as I did buy a set of Six Ton stands and when I got them home was shocked how they were ever allowed to pass a QC inspection. The ratchet bar had hardly any cut into it and it was easy to see why they would fail. You could run your hand down the bar and it was nearly smooth. The Locking Pawl had literally no where to lock into and I put them to work just to see if they were safe. I set my LWB GMC rear end on them and grabbed the bed. I gave it a little tug and the truck dropped to the floor. That was the first time I have "ever" seen a Jackstand fail under normal conditions. I returned them to the store and showed the manager how poorly constructed they were. I wrote HF and they replied "We will look into it". Well, a few months later they finally got recalled. I went back to the store and the same manger remembered me and told me they pulled them all. Just because you buy it at Snap On or HF doesn't mean it will not fail.

Well I have used them for over 20 myself without issue.
Funny reading the "pass QC" thing though.
I do check my stands before use while setting it up and post set up to ensure it's safe prior to getting under anything. Years ago I acquired two huge pieces of square oak blocks I also use as a back-stop as I have never trusted myself, much less a jack stand no matter where it comes from. I always tell myself I'm going to dinner tonight with everything I walked in here with, just like I do at work.
After over 20 years working in some very dangerous equipment in the Nav I'm wary. We aren't as bullet roof as we think.

Taking your personal safety for granted is a good way to get hurt, or worse. Nothing has changed in that since we had to watch out for saber tooth tigers waiting to eat us.

I have 6 ton Big Red brand. I think I got them from Pep ----. I will put some rims or my jack under there now. They have been holding my Blazer in Jack stand jail for a month now. I trust them but I guess I should not. I trusted my ex too.... FAIL !!!

Nice work, Larry. I have seen ones similar to those and thought about building some, just never got around to it. I have some steel ramps but I'm not sure I trust those either. Wood seems like it's as safe as anything.

Re: HF jack stand recall

It's kinda funny that people come up with all these home made, I won't say makeshift, ways to do what the jack stands are made to do because they don't trust jack stands, when jack stands are made to rely on rather than come up with makeshift ways to block a vehicle up. Seems we've gone full circle here. It's like using the computer but keeping a note pad and pen handy to write everything down in case the computer crashes

Who says I don't trust jack stands?

I just never spent any money for them. I've always had logs lying around and I save short pieces of 6x6, 2x6, etc just for shimming. My "ramps" are made of a couple of 3' long pieces of 6x8 cut at an angle on one end.

When I had to replace the TO bearing in my old log truck, I cut a piece of a Big Log the right length and then set it so that it just supported the transmission on one edge, and then took out the floor panel and slid the transmission back far enough on the log so that I could clear the input shaft. Used a chunk of 2x6 or 2x8 for a shim so it didn't dig into the end grain of the log.

Most everything I've ever done is on dirt or gravel so a big log or timber is more stable than a jack stand. Would be nice to have a big concrete floored shop with jack stands

I've considered ripping out our existing wooden garage and storage room, and replacing it with a four or five bay garage/shop built right into the hill with concrete floor and concrete walls halfway up the back.

Re: HF jack stand recall

I used cheap concrete pavers stacked to make stands for my Blazer tub when I replaced the frame all by myself. Just raise one corner a paver at a time and eventually it was high enough to pull the frame out. I used Jack stands to help with the last foot or so. The pavers were on sand in my back yard. I used the pavers as pavers around the house afterwards.

Re: HF jack stand recall

Those are substantial and hopefully stable objects adequate for use supporting a vehicle, not jack stands. Anyway, agree or not, this conversation is about store bought jack stands and that's where my last post was coming from

Just raise one corner a paver at a time and eventually it was high enough to pull the frame out. I used Jack stands to help with the last foot or so. The pavers were on sand in my back yard. I used the pavers as pavers around the house afterwards.
You should have seen how I replaced the chassis on our old VW bug!

I unhooked my log trailer and parked it on one side of the car and the truck on the other. Then I jacked up the VW body with a Hi-lift jack and ran poles under the front and rear fenders supported on each side by the parked truck and trailer and an assortment of other risers. Then just roll the rusted out chassis away and roll the good one under the good body.

The good chassis came out from under the wrecked Bug. I just unbolted that one and rolled the body sideways off of the chassis. It sat out in the sagebrush upside down for all the world to see for a while before we finally got it loaded up on a gooseneck load of scrap to Pueblo.
