Re: HF jack stand recall
^That right there is the poster-child for a full-pen weld! NOT. I sure am glad that I have four pin-type jack stands that I bought 40+ years ago here in the non-corrosive California desert region. They don't have the range of the ratchet-style, but I can live with that.

Re: HF jack stand recall
The thing with using masonry objects is you need to put a block of wood on top to contact the vehicle with. Masonry will, or can, break with weight concentrated on one area
They just don't make stickers as strong as they used to

Re: HF jack stand recall
Looks like I am going to reinforce my jack stands even though they were not purchased at HF.

Re: HF jack stand recall
A long time ago my father-in-law gave me this little guy. I've always been a little leery about using it and always preferred to use my Harbor freight Jack stands. Well now... this one's not looking so bad.

Re: HF jack stand recall
How does one weld that badly ???
I taught myself to weld but I was able to bend or break some pretty big pieces of steel while my welds held just fine. Guess my welding was better than my engineering

Re: HF jack stand recall
How does that get painted and a sticker applied? Absolutely NO quality inspection what so ever. Just poop them out and send a container load to America.
It actually pisses me off that HF calls their China crap "Pittsburg" tools. What a kick in the face to steal the name of a city where you killed their steel industry with inferior products made overseas.

Re: HF jack stand recall
Sorry, I can't believe that. They would have caulked it before painting if that was true

I used to question these at the local Pull-a-part in Atlanta. Now, they're starting to look good!

Re: HF jack stand recall
That is very stable. What bugs me with those is when I see them use the steelies I'd like to buy. They use the steel wheels and scrap the alloy

Re: HF jack stand recall
I never trusted the jack stands ,, always used wood blocks . Them pick and pull yards do use a lot of wheels to hold up the cars and trucks .. looked ok ..

Re: HF jack stand recall
Actually had one of their sets drop my truck down a few inches a little over a month ago. Thankfully it was when I was done with the oil change and just tightening up the lug nuts from rotating the tires. Nice little dent on my frame from it. Makes me cringe thinking we used these things when replacing the trans wiring harness on my father's 3/4 ton and he used them by himself fixing the brakes on my mother's truck before I had the stand drop on me. No more cheap safety equipment for this family... Not worth even the fear of what could of happened.

Re: HF jack stand recall
When you need to slam out 10,000 of those things in a day to make a yen, you go through the motions.
Back in the 80's, I seem to remember the rule of thumb for buying jackstands was to buy ones that had the legs tied together to prevent spreading, seems that bit of safety advice has fallen by the wayside some time ago. Heres a pallet rack that was hit by a forklift (not my photo), in this case, I'm guessing bad welds probably prevented more damage to the racks, in any case, zoom it at the broken off floor plate. Those plates are theoretically welded on the two long sides. Take a look at the dust on the floor plate, certainly wasn't a complete weld on the far side. https://i.imgur.com/spZS3Sf.jpg I like the solid post design, not very adjustable, but theres no legs to fail except those that provide sideways toppling; https://www.amazon.ca/Torin-Ton-Vehi.../dp/B0058T99DM |

Re: HF jack stand recall
I feel safe with my antique Blackhawks I got from an automotive supply house. Made of angle with struts between all four legs. Stamped out and run a quick bead is not a good design. Especially at the speed they are popped out, as mentioned. "carefully" assembled they could work just fine

Re: HF jack stand recall
As a safety measure i always leave something under a vehicle i am working on besides Jack stands. It may be a removed tire, the jack, or a stack of 6x6s. I spend alot of time not working on paved surfaces so I don't trust any one particular method as I have seen them all fail. I try and put a sheet of plywood down first when practical. As a side i used to work at a junk yard and I have seen the double rim method break or fall also. I do think that they are much better than what we call Jack stands though. If you have a dought you need to reexamine your setup as I can't think of many worse ways to go than the truck falling off the jack.
