20 Years
My wife's place was broken into about 20 years ago. One of the things stolen was a Nickel plated .357 Colt Trooper MK III.
So today we're checking the mail and there is a letter from the L.A. Sheriffs Dept. stating that they had recovered the gun and we had 30 days to come and get it. 20 years later? Who would have thought. We wrote that thing off a long time ago. So I guess it's a road trip to L.A. for us. My wife wants it back. And I can get a Tommy's double chili cheese burger.

Re: 20 Years
Since the revolver is an inanimate object, incapable of any self generated action, my guess would be zero, zip, zilch, nada, none.
Paul, congrats to you and your wife for your good fortune in recovering ir.

Re: 20 Years
I couldn't believe it either but the gun is still registered to her like a car would be. And was reported stolen so it could be traced. I don't know the circumstances on how they found it. They don't give any details. It's just come and get it.
I'm wondering about the condition too. It was perfect when it was stolen. We'll see. I miss Tommy's too. I'd eat there at least once a week. Messy but delicious. I'd always end up with chili in my beard. Still worth it.

Nice to get something back, even if it was 20 years ago. I hope that it is in good condition. Now I'm jonesing on a Tommie's chili cheeseburger. Guess what's for lunch? There's a Tommie's about 3 miles from me.

3 miles? You're killing me here. I'd be so all over that. Three places I miss since I moved. #1 Tommy's #2 In N Out #3 The Hat. There's nothing up here except Taco Bell and a Burger King. They are okay if you're really hungry. But that's about it. So I'm looking forward to getting some really good food. It's been a while. Two other places that I miss. #1 El Merendero in LaVerne. Right next to the Pomona Fairplex. If you go to the Pomona swap meet or GNRS or whatever. It's the place to eat. We would get our hand stamped so we didn't have to eat the fair food and walk over there. The pork green chile burrito's smothered in sauce are all that. And the salsa is great. Expect a line. #2 Warehouse Pizza. Also in LaVerne by the fairgrounds. They only take cash and don't deliver. They don't need to. Expect a line here as well. The best pizza ever. I'd like to go to all of them when I'm down there. But I don't think I can eat that much.

Re: 20 Years
That's really cool you got it back, period. But 20 years? WOW!
I understood what he was saying w/o taking it to the age old "guns don't kill people, people kill people" thing. That's absolutely true, but I immediately figured what was meant, but not added, was "... at the hands of a criminal". I get why the question was asked, too. The gun was in the hands of "people" who are criminals for 20 years. That's the common sense part. Then there is the statistical part that tells us a high number of gun related (ok, human holding a gun related) crimes are carried out using stolen guns. The gun being stolen does not mean it was used for crime. It might have been put on display as a collectible for 20 years. But you have to wonder how it ended up being confiscated.

Folks can wonder or speculate if that’s what they want to do. I didn’t wonder what was meant by his wondering how many lives it took. He could have just as easily said I wonder how many liquor stores were robber. He is the only one that knows what he meant if it meant anything at all. He also can elaborate if he wants. I won’t put words in his mouth. Someone took a gun that didn’t belong to them. That’s lawlessness. What happened with the gun after that, I don’t know. There are certain people who don’t want others to have guns. This is what not staying silent looks like. Again I’m not attributing any motives to 4u2nv.

Re: 20 Years
Let us know when you get back with it. I'm really curious to see if it's still in good condition - I hope it is.
I have one missing gun -really just the action - an AR7. A friend took it years ago to adjust the firing pin for me, and I can't remember what friend it was. I'd love to get that one back. It was a gift from my father-in-law.

Re: 20 Years
I had a muzzle loader stolen 40 years ago. Funny thing was a couple days ago I ran across the manual for it. It had gotten wet and most of the pages were stuck together but inside there was still the original "registration" card with the shop name, purchase date, and serial number.
I sure don't expect to ever get that one back. I still have all the stuff that goes with it including bullet (ball) mold so I might try to get another fifty caliber rifle just for the fun of it.

Re: 20 Years
Well we hit kind of a snag. My wife became suspicious at the fact that the letter was so vague. So she called the Sheriffs Dept.
It turns out that she has to send in a LEGR (Law Enforcement Gun Release)form. This was never mentioned in the letter. It's just a good thing that she got right on it and found out. Because we only have 30 days. The form is typical moronic government stupidity. Asking all kinds of technical questions about a gun that she hasn't seen in twenty years. And of course it has to be sent by snail mail. Another delay. This red tape is ridiculous. It's her property. It's registered to her. It was stolen. They know that! Why does she have to tell them what country it was manufactured in. Or how long the barrel is? She doesn't remember after all this time. Bureaucracy at its finest. You have to jump through hoops to get your own stuff back. And there's a deadline or they will destroy it. Which is what I think they want to do.

Re: 20 Years
That's exactly the point. They're fulfilling their legal obligation to return your property, but hoping to make it so difficult that you can't or won't.
