NICE!

I have to admit, I was a little Butt Sore you got rid of the Detroit in the rear and put in the True Trac in lieu of keeping the detroit and putting the True Track in the front.

But hey, my Detroit came with my CUCV axles.... and I'm determined to continue to sell myself on the detroit locker. Yes, I'm cheap... and lazy!!!!

looks like the locker is doing its job, i noticed that your leafs spring u bolt are upside down, is it a ''flip kit'' ?

When I added the lift block I opted for the round u-bolts and upper anchor plates seeing I was removing the helper spring pack at the same time and figured a little less to get hung up on.

New to the board, this is one of the best threads On the entire internet. You are the man for sharing all this tech. I'm going to use your method to put an NV4500 in my '86 K30.

Lnielson- Thanks for the compliment ;
as for the Truetrac i like it very much and it goes almost unnoticeable for the most part once in a while if i do "S" turn sharp at low speed on pavement it will chirp which reminds me its still there.
I am considering swapping out my front lockrite for the maximizer diff on ebay looks like a Chinese version of truetrac ;but less then half price... good enough for the front diff that is not used too much.
There does not seem to be any reviews or write ups on it that I can find so I may be the first on that keep watching...

Well I got most of the parts for a rebuild and LSD swap on my 60F.
waiting on a few more and then will tackle this. I will be removing a Powertrax Lockrite and replacing it with a Maxiumizer diff similar to a Truetrac for better street manners.

I was thinking of replacing the trac lok in my 60, what is your impression of the clone?

Do you happen to know if they make one for the Dana 44?

Only see one for Dana 60 front with 4.56/up numerically ratio though there might be others.
As for impression looks good on bench ; but the shipping box was pretty bad shape {shipped from California}.

Will do video of traction test when installed.

I just got a response from the ebay seller, I asked what part number for a 60F with 4.56 and a 44F with 4.10.

He replied "not available for 44 and not for use on front axles"

Wondering why they think it wont work on a 60F

I was looking back through my thread and saw my CHEAP steering shaft upgrade to get rid of the rag joint ;' I forgot to mention.
I found a f/s GM van I believe around 1996 (see pic) . The steering shaft is all enclosed in rubber ,cut it off and remove shaft from van. A slight groove on steering shaft at firewall for pinch bolt is all that was needed for install on d-shaft of ol'black ...voila no more play!


Ironically one from an Astro van fits the first gen S10.

I just picked up a dana 60 with an open diff and came across your thread in a search for feedback on the max lsd. Looks like the price went up but still no word on quality or fit. Work ok or is it in the trash now?

We're all kind of curious. I just got pushed into a corner. My truck was parked on a slant in my driveway and my Drivers side inner seal was leaking on my front D60. Get to pull the thing apart to do a few bucks in seals. My plan was to do seals, bearings, D70 outers and locker up front. I almost pulled the trigger on a truetrac Saturday.

I hate doing seals! Plunking in a truetrac and some bigger outers my get me off my butt!

Funny how your all from same state and thats where the diff comes from?

Anyhow -been working alot and very cold temps up north. Young lads truck is open front and rear so he decided on this(pic) for the rear of his 90 Dodge cummins powered Dana 70 , might take some pics of that quick install along with a speedi sleeve he needs on the one side .

Well time to dig into the Dana 70 and install the Lock rite, and at the same time a speedy sleeve on the non ring side axle hub which we had to pull for the locker anyhow.
Didn't have a long enough straight punch for the split pin so we found a suitable alternative. Most Dana axles of the era used the split pin to hold the pinion shaft in.

The easiest way to remove the axle cones is a good rap with a hammer on the side right at the cone stud and should pop free; leave nut on end of stud so your not on a search mission around garage floor.
The thrust washer under each side gear must be installed on the locker side gear. The locker just fits inside carrier(ring gear side first)with its axle still in place.
The hardest part for some reason is getting the springs in the locker but finally with some finesse they are installed. Now we install our new pinion shaft and new (not included with locker, Split pin).

Ok; now on to the Speedy sleeve...

Here's how we done the sleeve- A bit of craft paper around it taped on and an appropriate sized exhaust pipe for install tool , also I believe the sleeve's are the same for rear 60/70 and even 14 bolts.

Some silicone on the spindle where sleeve will sit and also some on the "outside" of hub seal to insure leak free install and its done!



Now STINKY has true 2 wheel drive out back at least .
Seems to work pretty good with not alot of slop in driveline being this is a Cast iron Getrag 5 speed /np205 and 3.54 gears.

The disassembly begins on the Dana 60...

The king pins are tight but the floor jack handle was enough for the removal.

We cracked a king pin while removing but luckily it came loose.

An old s10 4x4 torsion bar came in handy to remove inner seals and push rag through to clean the gunk out of tubes and it was ready for install.

The side by side compare in the last pic.

Interested to see how this turns out. I searched and couldn't see a 4.10 and below carrier option in this maximizer limited slip. I think I'd go for one if they had that option.

Time to tap in new seals .
A 1/2 3/4 ton front spindle nut socket fits seal perfectly for installing .

The backlash on the gearing was at .008 when removed and we are hoping to keep the same. The factory carrier had .045 on ring gear side and .066 on non.
We removed bearings and honed out for a slip fit on new carrier to get lash within specs;then installed new bearings on the Maximizer carrier.
Needed .048 on ring gear and .032 on non and it got us the .008 we were looking for when installed with new bearings and torqued to spec.
