Way tooooo Shiny
hey guys...new here to the forum and picked up a 1973 stepside with a 383 stroker. So the guy painted it a shiny black with an average paint quality. What I want to do is go with a faded black look like the picture and if I can't do that maybe a primer black. That said this is going to be a driver so now worries about the a show quality paint but how do I get that faded black without a repaint? Do I just hit the clear with sand paper? let me know your thoughts.

Do you have any pictures of your truck you can post?

Re: Way tooooo Shiny
Try a scotchbrite pad I'd start with a white one and if that doesn't produce the desired results move darker say grey then on to red and finally green. You could do it similar to a sanding for buffing process and use those color of pads in reverse then "buff" it with something like comet. Then your def not worried about reflective surfaces anymore plus it will be clean and smell fresh. All kidding aside you could scuff it with a pad then try different things from wax to abrasive cleaners to get the desired result. Good luck and happy sanding. Jim

Re: Way tooooo Shiny
thanks so...once I get to the desired results do I just leave it like it is or do I need to protect it with something. Or is that what the wax will do?
here's what she looks like now. |

The wax will seal it in to some degree. I thought the truck on the trailer in the first pic is the one that was too shiny. Nice looking truck anyway that is why they make vanilla and chocolate ice cream everybody has their own thing and that is part of what makes this hobby/lifestyle so great. Enjoy Jim

Re: Way tooooo Shiny
I have a friend painted his old hot rod a shiny black. Well, after painting it, he color/wet sanded the paint and it looked like black primer. Before he started on the buffing stage (to bring the shine back), he decided to drive it to a local show. He got so many compliments, and so many loved its "rat rod" look, that he just said hell with buffing it, I'm leaving it flat black.
