Project: Stepping Stone - 72' Cheyenne - Kansas City

As purchased:

SPID:

About the truck:
1972 Chevy Cheyenne

Factory:
  • Leaf Springs
  • Amp/Oil/Temp Gauges
  • Disc Brakes
  • Power Steering
  • A/C (All lines, condenser etc. removed thanks to previous owner )
  • 402 BB (replaced with a rebuilt 350 by previous owner )
  • Med Bronze/White Exterior (Repainted Bronze/Tan some where along the line. Just a guess since the whole truck has flaking clear coat on it.)
  • Saddle Interior

Not Factory:
  • 4 Core Radiator
  • 94amp Alternator

Things I've done so far..
  • Pulled out faded carpet (mainly to check for rust then decided until I buy new carpet I don't mind the bare floor)
  • Stripped ****ty wood grain stickers off dash bezel and glove box door.
  • New matched key set. (From Classic Parts)
  • New turn signal cancel thing. (From Classic Parts)
  • New passenger side window crank (From Classic Parts)
  • New wiper knob. (From Classic Parts)
  • Replaced ****ty plastic fuel filter with ****ty glass one. (From O'Reilly's)
  • Replaced valve cover gaskets with Fel-Pro PermaDryPlus gaskets (From O'Reilly's)
  • Upgraded alternator to a 12si 94amp internal regulated. There's a tutorial on this site to do this (Thanks!) (O'Reilly's Part No. 01-0260)
  • Replaced missing fan shroud
  • Replaced 67-69 painted bumper with a '72 chrome bumper (teeitup).

I'll try to get some better pics soon.

Running total including truck price: $3200

Re: '72 Cheyenne Project - Kansas City

Upcoming plans:
  • Wire wheel wheels down and repaint them silver.
  • Remove crappy tint.
  • Replace noisy rearend (only makes noise while coasting, normal?)
  • Electric Fans (Need to locate a stock fan shroud first)
  • Polish Intake
  • Clean up underhood wiring and hide as much of it as possible (see 68stepside's truck for my inspiration)
  • Fix what little rust is on the driver's side floor.
  • Fix rust or replace driver's side door.
  • Patch speaker holes in doors.
  • Fix rust on inner bed sides and do the Mar-K metal to wood bed conversion.
  • Repaint truck Med. Bronze and White.

I like it the way it is. The rattle can may detract from the truck.

Re: '72 Cheyenne Project - Kansas City

I would stay away from the rattle job, and take the advice from 72cheyennesuper20 and start out by painting the wheels for a new look on the outside.

Re: '72 Cheyenne Project - Kansas City

Got a different rear end now. Holding out on putting it in until I buy a flip kit and drop shocks. Finally swapped out the grill with a stock one I bought a month or so ago. I'll try to get new pics of the front up soon... maybe after I pick up another bumper.

Re: '72 Cheyenne Project - Kansas City

Sounds like you have one waiting for you from Teeitup.

I'm going to meet Randy this weekend at the Ararat Swap Meet at Woodlands, you should try to make it.

Can't wait to see more pics!

You sir are awesome. I just PMd Randy to ask if he'll bring the bumper down with him. I'll be there for sure, doubt I'll drive the Cheyenne with the rear end as loud as it is right now.

Re: '72 Cheyenne Project - Kansas City

Just ordered a DJM 5" Flip Kit and CalMax Drop Shocks from: http://www.godfathercustoms.com/

They have some damn good prices on DJM stuff. $127 for the flip kit and $41 per shock.

I have my salvage rear end mostly cleaned up. It should be good to go by the time the flip kit gets here.

It's going up on Craigslist and the forum here this weekend with some other stuff. It"s too heavy and awkward to ship though. Local Pickup Only.

Re: '72 Cheyenne Project - Kansas City

That thing looks good!!!! Definitely money well spent on the DJM kit!

Have you decided if you're going to make it to the All Truck Nat's? They just around the corner. As of tomorrow it's only a month away...

So what's next on the build?
