Red face About time... my 409

A few guys have requested I post some pics of the big block so here they are. This is probably one of the biggest things that usually seperates my truck from everyone elses Let me know what you think. Thanks

Finally! Looks great. Ok, ya know im gonna ask....why blue valve covers? LOL. Just kiddin', I know a guy that painted his whole 348 green! His reason was because of all the money he had in it. I've also seen these engines done completely in blue and one in yellow. (all had chrome covers and air cleaner)

Kobuzz: Actually, I just bought another '09. Guess, I'm getting lucky, huh
Meathead: It's a truck motor, came out of a '65 C-80. While the compression is low and HP not scary-high, torque is absolutely AWESOME and from what bobs409 says, these engines are wanted by many hot-rodders because of notches in the cylinders that increase air flow and keep it cool (did I get that right Bob?)
Bobs409: Why blue? Why chrome like every other engine I see? Hey, least it's GM blue. I love the car though, that's BEAUTIFUL. It's got something to back it up too, that's nice AND powerful... what kind of headers and do you think I could find some to fit mine?

so 348s 389s and 409s were big blocks with wierd heads and valve covers? why have i never heard of them? were they in older cars than 67 or newer than 72? thanks, for teaching me, Ben

I think that the 348 first came out in the 58 impalas. than in some thing like 61 they introduced the 409. This was in the cars like impalas and bel airs. I'm not really sure about truck engines though. And I'm pretty sure that the 389 is a pontiac which isn't really a big block or a small block. Hope this helps a little

You guys are driving me nuts. My dream engine for my 56 is a hilborn fuel injected (electronic conversion) 409. Oh well, thanks for keepin' the dream alive.

the 348 was first introduced as a motor for big trucks..... it was introduced into cars in 58 in the impala.....the 409 came out in 61 ands final year (in cars atleast) was 65

Ok, here's a run down on these engines.

The 348:

The 348 engine was first introduced in October of 1957. This was the begining
of the "Big block" for Chevrolet.

The 348 was originally scheduled to be used only in Chevrolet trucks. More
cubic inches were needed in the passenger cars so the 348 was used there as
well.

In the first year, two versions were available; the 4-barrel 250hp and the 280hp
equipped with 3-2 barrel carburetor's. Late in 58, another version was released,
this time being the 315hp 348.

The additional horsepower was achieved by using a high lift cam and solid
lifters. It also was equipped with the 3-2 barrel carb setup.

The 250hp, and the 280hp were available with powerglide or turboglide
transmission, however the 315hp 348 was only available with the 3-speed
transmission.

The 4-speed was available for the 59 models. The 305hp version was
introduced and was nothing more than the 315hp with a 4-barrel instead of the 3-2
barrels.

Available for 1959 were the, 250hp, 280hp, 305hp, 315hp, 320hp and a 335hp
348's.

The higher horsepower engines were equipped with dual point distributors,
improved head's and 2 1/2"exhaust. The carter AFB was also introduced and used
on the 320hp.

By 1961, the horsepower was still growing. Now available were the 340hp and
the 350hp 348's. This year would mark the birth of the famed 409 engine.

Engine Weight=640/650lbs
Forged Crank
Connecting rod length=6.135 inches
Fuel pump push rod length=5.75 inches
Dipstick on Drivers side
Ignition timing=4 degrees B.T.D.C.
Spark plugs=AC44 (standard), AC45 (hotter), AC43
(colder)
Spark plug gap=.035"
Rocker arm ration=1.75:1
Internally balanced
All 348's were made in the Tonowanda build plant


The 409:

Late in 1961 the 409 engine was released. Because of it's late arrival,
production numbers were low in the first year.

The total production figures for 409's in '61 was only 142! Making them very
rare today. This also marked the first year of the SS. There was a total of 453
Supersports made in 1961. The 1961 SS 409 could be considered the father of
the muscle car for Chevy.

Other auto makers like, Pontiac, Buick, Plymouth, were all coming out with
bigger engines. Chevrolet needed the 409 to keep up at the drag strips.

There was only one version of the 409 in 1961. It was the 360hp. It was
equipped with solid lifters, high lift cam, and a 4-barrel Carter AFB carburetor.

In 1962, a 380hp could be had. More importantly the 409hp 409 with 2 4-barrel
Carter AFB's was now available. This is the one that the Beach boys were singing
about in '62.

1963 saw 3 new horsepower 409's. The 340hp, 400hp, and the 425hp. The
340hp had hydraulic lifters, and both the 400 and 425hp came with solid lifters,
and special cam. This was the first year chrome was used on the 409's.

The 400hp 409 came with a single 4-barrel Carter AFB carburetor, and the
425hp 409 with 2 4-barrel Carter AFB's.

These same three engines were available for 1964 however it would be the last
year for the 425hp version.

In 1965 the 340hp and the 400hp 409's were the only sizes available. Sales
dwindled down to 2,828 in 1965 due to the 409 option ending around February of
1965. This was the last year for the 409. It was replaced by the 396.

*note, there were some blocks with CFD cast into them that were
supposed to have come form the Central Foundry Division when
there was a strike at the Tonowanda plant.

1964-8,864
1965-2,828-(2,086 340hp/742 400hp)

43,755 409 engines were produced from 1961-1965.
These number do not include trucks

Thanks for the info Bob... hey, having a '65 in my truck, do the low production numbers make this engine worth more than any of the others (expcept for '61, with the lowest production numbers of all)?

Those production numbers aren't for truck engines, only passenger cars.

I don't know of any records of the number of truck engines produced.

The 1961 passenger car engines are greatly sought after by restorers. Other than that, the most valuable would be the high horse engines. The 1962 409/409, 63-64 425hp, 63-65 400hp.

I can't find your old post about the oil line but I have had some replies at my 348/409 site about it. No one believes this line to be stock. I was thinking it may be been rigged up too. Did you say it goes into the distributor? If so, it may be the old style distributor with the oil fill tube that someone hooked up oil pressure to. Very odd however!

Another idea is that since it's from a large truck C-80, it probably had an oil pressure gauge so possibly someone ran the line back into the engine instead of just removing/plugging it. The oil sending units on the car engines (because they had idiot lights) is just above the oil filter. This is where an oil gauge line could go too.

If not a record Mark, sure has to be in the top of the contenders, LOL. Love the look of those engines. Was at a car show prior to the Covid bit and seen a triple black '58 Impala with 348 a three deuce set-up and four speed. Beautiful looking car for sure. Don't see many of those engines anymore.
