Here is my 1961 Rampside. I plan on painting the stripe back to Cardinal Red and putting wood slats between the raised areas inside the bed.

Great looking truck!!! Thanks for sharing the pics. Its interesting to see how many parts are interchangeable with the conventional trucks.

Re: Post Your Corvair Rampside/Loadside Trucks

Brakes totally. Trans is a two speed Power Glide but made to fit onto the engine. The engine fascinated me along with the story behind "Corvair" that I have heard. In that time period, the U.S. was seeing a need for "small trucks" since VW was sending in their single and double cabs. There was also a challenge to the big three from new small European cars coming in. GM bought a 356 Porsche (I have one of those I restored) and reverse engineered the "boxer type" engine in a six cylinder mode for Corvair (really same idea as the Subaru engine now). Air cooled and dual carburetor. The only problem is it leaks oil all the time. So, they put it into a trucks (the Rampside......a one of a kind where the side ramp comes down to wheel in a cable spool if you are Bell Telephone, a regular pick up with just the opening in the back and a van. GM also got the gov't to put a 25% TARIFF (tax) on foreign trucks so VW single and doubles are really valuable now and converted to selling in the U.S. the microbus which is the first minivan since there was no tariff on those. Germany countered with putting a tax on U.S. chicken and of course we lost in that deal. The "rampie" is unique and air cooled and rear engine versus the Dodge and Ford which tip forward when stopping too fast. The suspension was a breakthrough with independent wheel like Europe. Its an interesting truck and they did not make too many.

I've always been a fan of the Corvairs, mostly the 65-69 cars, but the uniqueness of the trucks and vans was always cool too.

Exclamation Re: Post Your Corvair Rampside/Loadside Trucks

The engines were of the same design as in Corvair cars: a rear-mounted, horizontally-opposed six cylinder, air-cooled engine that delivered 80-HP and 128 ft-lbs of torque with 145 in3 of displacement.
However, recognizing the Corvair 95's cargo hauling purposes, the "turbo-six" engine was enhanced with better exhaust valves and valve rotators, a lowered compression and larger jets for a richer fuel mixture from the carburetors .
The power plant was upgraded to 164 in3 and 110-HP in 1964. Some enthusiasts have replaced the stock engine with a Corvair Monza 140-HP, four-carburetor powerhouse for a smother drive up hills and with large cargo loads.

Thanks! I love it when the work is appreciated. By the way, here is a pix in focus. Note the sign you need with 80hp on CA freeways on the back.

Re: Post Your Corvair Rampside/Loadside Trucks

Here is my newly acquired '61 Loadside. All original with a couple of accessories.
One of which being a period correct GEM-TOP sliding door canopy/topper for a Rampside pickup.
I have not found another example of this interesting canopy anywhere!

As it was mentioned before...this is 1 of 2,475 built in 1961.
I am also starting a '61 Loadside registry on FB @ Corvanatics group.
If you own one, then add your truck!
