p/s question

I'm currently installing power steering in my 69' and it's a short pump 307 V8. The new pump pulley doesn't line up with my crank pulley. I currently have a 2 groove pulley for the crank. Does anyone now if the crank pulley is different for trucks with p/s, and if so how? I researched the site a little and found out chevy makes three different offset pulleys for this type of pump, so that might fix my problem, but I don't wanna go buying a bunch of parts until I research this a little more. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Kevin

I know my old (pretty much all original) '70 with A/C, and power steerign came with a 4 pully crank set up. It was actually a 2 pully, with another 2 pully on it piggy back.

Talking

Pulley setups can be agravating because of the small differences
between the years. If you have a 69 307, you probably have a cast pulley and so your power steering bracket should be a cast bracket. If your bracket is a metal stamping, then probably a stackup of stamped pullies on your damper will bring it back in line. When you start mixing the years, the grooves don't always line up. 69 trucks are different from 69 cars.

Do you know what year the ps pump setup came off of?

rusty, this is a sore subject with me also. I rebuilt my engine, put all the original parts back on, and I ran into the same problem. I'm living with it for now, but I have rubber belt residue all over the place from the belt wearing on one side (always carry a spare!). Might need to slap some washers on there to get it lined up. LOL

The pump came from a 1970 C-10 I believe. That's what the guy who gave it to me said.

In the same line of problems...

I'm swapping a Cad 500 into my '68. I got the pump with the motor and I need to make sure a '68 power steering box will work. Will I have to change hoses? Should I find a newer box to put in?

Thanks for the info.

I have a '67 with a 327, and I am going to add P/S and A/C. Where can I get a set of pullys to add to the Crank??? Any suggestion from those who know (andy that's you...) on how I am to install them?? I haven't looked at it yet, but I hope it's not too big a deal.

A lot of combinations

Why GM had so many PS variances on 68-72 trucks is beyond me. They didn't get any better. I posted a pic of the three different pulley offsets, that I found in my shop, when no one believed me. If you measure from the back of the pump housing/can to the front edge of the pump pulley and email me that distance...I think I can tell/sell you the right pulley for about $20. I hope you have correct truck PS and not some odd ball stuff. You might want to post or send a pic of you pump & bracket setup.
Here are those three pumps again. All SB GM truck 68-72.

Question 307

sounds like your power steering pump may be for a 307 with air pump on it. if thats the pump you have it takes a three pully set up. snow man

The pic I just posted shows exactly how far off my pump is from the original crank pulley. The crank pulley in the photo has an added crank pulley bolted to the front to make it line up. This extra crank pulley is what I need. Has anyone seen this setup before, and does anyone know what the kind of pulley it's from or the part #?

Thanks for all the input guys,

Kevin

My truck (1970, factory A/C, P/S) has a 4-pulley setup on the crank which looks to be the 2-on-2 described earlier. I know it's all original (pulley-wise, aside from the water pump pulley...it started disintigrating once! cost me an alternator belt...)

FYI, my P/S is the frontmost, then a gap, then A/C, then the alt furthest back.

You guys are correct. GM had 3 different pulley setups. For trucks with P.S., AC, and some trucks had air pumps. It was the start of smog setups. Many California trucks, and Southern trucks had them. Most with manual transmissions.
Getting the right combo can be a pain in the ass.
