Joining the 88-98 crowd!

Hello all!

I've been around the 60-66 pages and the 73-87 pages for years now, but as of yesterday I can officially start hanging out in the 88-98 pages!

This is my new daily driver: '93 Silverado, 4.3L with 5-speed and 3.42 rear end. It has 157k miles and has been garage kept for most of it's life. Everything works perfect (except cruise) and it drives super nice.

I spent today cleaning it up and taking photos. Hope you all enjoy.

And one next to my '78 Diesel

Re: Joining the 88-98 crowd!

No real plans to change anything just yet, just drive it to keep the miles off of my '78.

I would like to get the cruise control working though. Anybody troubleshot these before? Common issues to start looking at?

If I keep the truck long enough, maybe later I'll stuff a 6.5L turbo diesel....

Re: Joining the 88-98 crowd!

Damn, somebody really fussed over keeping that truck pristine. Very nice.

It's been a few years since I had to fix a cruise control but I do vaguely remember two problems in the past.

1. The switch on the brake pedal. I don't remember if it was unplugged or what. I just remember I was able to fix the problem in seconds once I crawled under there.

2. There is a ribbon deal inside of the cruise control module on the firewall. Mine was bad. It pulls the cruise control to throttle cable as needed to vary speed. When I took mine apart and saw it was all screwed up, my buddy at GM parts counter confirmed it was a very common problem with these trucks. It seems like it was a bit uncomfortable price for what I got, but it solved the issue.

Very nice looking ride. Goes good with the ole squarebody. The V6 & 5 speed are a great combo for a daily driver.

this thread could help with your cruise issue, if not you may be able to search further and find something else.

Got some new shoes for the little red truck and went on a 1200 mile round trip to Sacramento and back to Portland. We swung by Crater Lake on the way back:

Re: Joining the 88-98 crowd!

Truck ran beautifully. Although I did have to add an electric fan while in Sacramento. With the A/C on, the engine wanted to climb over 210 degrees in the hot weather. Anyone else have experience with normal engine temps for these V6's?

Here is another shot from Cap Far West near Sacramento:

Re: Joining the 88-98 crowd!

Stock is 195 thermostat, under load/high heat fairly common to hit 210. I think my 2002 4.3 got up to 200-210 range once or twice, with no issues. Until the fan froze and cause a probably already weak head gasket to blow, those temps were never an issue.

So can I switch to a 180 thermostat or should I put in a V8 radiator? If I get stuck in traffic, she'll climb over 210. Even with the electric fan installed, she seems to not like traffic in hot weather.

I would make sure my gauge is accurate first. I honestly don't know about thermostat. Myself I would also try the 180, but I think the computer expects then to run a bit warmer, so it may change some fuel mixture ratios if you go colder and might make it a hair rich. Make sure you clutch fan is good and your radiator is clear. Flush out the dexcool and go green also.

Re: Joining the 88-98 crowd!

Nice clean truck!

For what it's worth, I was having the same issue with my truck getting uncomfortably hot under load. Changing the thermostat made no difference. It would run cooler under normal conditions, but still climbed under load.

Finally, I changed the radiator and that fixed it. I could see a little bit of crud in the old radiator, but didn't think it was that bad. I tried flushing it several times and there was no change. Lesson learned - it was apparently clogged up even though I didn't think it looked that bad after flushing it.

Re: Joining the 88-98 crowd!

i will second some of the advice given. verify the gauge, check the clutch on the mechanical fan, and if all checks out, time to look into the radiator itself.

Re: Joining the 88-98 crowd!

Nice trucks, have also a square body here.Have new radiators
in both,195 thermostat in my -92 and 180 in the -83.

No heating problem at all.Are a little suspicious on the -92
gauges,my oil pressure gauge has different readings so i
mount a mechanical Autometer and the pressure readings
are very steady.Have new oilpressure sender/sensor.

My temp gauge have also a little different readings and i think the normal hot operation reading is to low on the gauge.195F should be about 90C.New temp sensor also.

Re: Joining the 88-98 crowd!

Well, I went to the local pick-n-pull and found another fan clutch for $10. Came home and threw it on to see and...MAGIC! I can actually hear the fan working and the temp stays under 200 when in traffic and runs a little cooler down the road. I'm so happy that was a cheap fix! Thanks for all the help.

Re: Joining the 88-98 crowd!

So I found a set of plastic center caps from a 90's era truck and thought I would buy them just in case they would work with my rims. And they did!

This is the exact look I wanted when I bought this truck and now I have it.

Never mind all the junk in the bed, getting ready for a load to the dump.
