Help on EST value of 69 gmc 4x4

Good afternoon everyone,

This is my first post on 47-72 chevy truck fourms and I come to it looking for some help on what the estimated price should be for a truck I'm interested in buying.

Going to jump right into it here, it is a 69 gmc 4x4. It was rebuilt to be used at tractor pulls and such. He said it still runs but ill believe it when I see it.

This is what I know from looking at the truck and information I gathered from talking to the gentleman that is potentially selling the truck:

Frame is pretty much rust free and straight
Cab is off the truck, on the side of the shop but the bed is on
Numbers are not matching in the truck
he has a lot of work into the engine, which is a 350 (Supposely over $6000)
Dana 60 Rear and Dana 44 Front
Manual Transmission
It needs rewired and everything checked since its been sitting for 10 years

If I could drive the truck off his property I would expect to pay a higher price, but the fact is ill have to get a trailer of some sort and make a few trips back and forth to get all the parts and truck.

What do you guys think?

That's what I'm not sure of yet. I'm suppose to be meeting with him at some point this week to talk dollars. I'm going to assume his going to start off abnormally high due to what he has invested into his engine.

If you didn't want the engine, maybe you could work a deal out with him for a way better price. It's really impossible to say what it's worth without pictures. Check the cab over good, i.e rockers, cab corners, above windshield, the cab supports. These are all common rust places. Is it a 3/4 ton? I would check everything over very good since it's a pulling truck. Frame could have been modified. If the motor really is built for pulling, it probably has high compression and wouldn't be good for street driving anyway. If you look and are still unsure, take some pictures and post them here and we can give you a better idea

Re: Help on EST value of 69 gmc 4x4

I'm over here waiting for my email to refresh and it doesn't do it automatically, ha.

Yea that's not a half bad idea. Well since its all in pieces, and by pieces I mean the cab is off the frame, interior is in the bed that is still attached to the frame. It should be easy to get some good pictures and angles.

And since I'm not into pulling, where should I look at to see if the frame was modified for what I'm only assuming is more torque stress on the frame.

Re: Help on EST value of 69 gmc 4x4

Really could go two ways. On one hand you might walk in to a really cool motor and a solid 4x4 with great axles already in it. A little time and labor into it on your part and off you go.

Or....you could be looking at a twisted up beat down rig that somebody built for pulling and never intended to use it for daily driving again. Look up "tractor pull gone bad" on YouTube and you'll get an idea of what these trucks do there whole life it's a very fun sport IMO, and if I had a truck to make a puller out of, I garauntee you it would NEVER be fit for daily driving again lol especially with a manual trans.

Think of it like this, we all had that short term girlfriend we will never forget. Lots of fun, no worries about the future at all, but you never brought her home to meet Mom. She just wasn't fit to be a keeper but boy was she fun while it lasted

I didn't think about that aspect of it Mrturner1. When its said and done id like it to be a nice truck to putz around in. Sounds like when I get there again I need to talk to him some more and ask more pulling orientated questions. and Also do as 68350 recommended, take pictures and ill post them on here and see what yall thing about it.

Re: Help on EST value of 69 gmc 4x4

Well I would check to see if the frame has been boxed, cut, or welded on. I would just check the frame carefully for any signs of welding or cutting, should be noticeable because when it was done it probably wasn't priority to make it look good. I would also check to see if it's a half ton or 3/4 ton frame. There should be a partial VIN stamped on the drivers side frame rail right by the steering box. It will be on top of the frame rail. Most likely it'll need to be wire brushed to read it. Also check vin on cab to see if VIN matches frame.

Re: Help on EST value of 69 gmc 4x4

I don't think I'm going to pursue this anymore. The gentleman returned my phone call I left this morning because I was going to be in the area and I wanted to talk prices so I could think about it. well he wasn't there so I left him a voicemail and he just called back and we talked.

He wants $12k and didn't want to move from it.

But thank you everyone for you help and input. Learned some dos and donts and things to look for in my journey for my gmc project.

Good call man, you'll find something! Be patient and you'll end up happy with what you get.

12K for a pile of parts is ridiculous

Good luck in your search.

I'll second what led said...
I'd wonder where the OP is if he/she's looking for a truck.

You are dollars ahead watching the CL sites out west and grabbing something there--plenty of good deals and shipping is fairly cheap right now. That's the way I would go--and have many times! Do your homework, enlist the help of folks here and ask for lots of pics!
