If the SPID is still there maybe a clue there. Like a special paint code or something.

Old thread...we may never know, but my grandpa had a early to mid 70's Ford that had been converted to run on propane (natural gas maybe???). The tank was pill shaped and sat in the bed horizontally up against the cab. I am gonna say that the tank this truck was fitted with was a bit wider than ideal AND they wanted 2 tanks.

No idea what the cutouts were for. But, easy fix to get rid of them.

Propane tank is my guess...Should be tell tale hose holes and mounting holes in the bed...
