steering column rebuild

Any one rebuilt a 64 steering column? I have a 64 k10 and the shaft can just wiggle around inside the column, I took everything apart to fix the turn signals and when taking everything out i found metal dust inside because the shaft just hangs and rubs in side the shaft. will a rebuild fix this? i am guessing i must be missing an upper bearing to keep the shaft in place. is this a fixable issue? or should i just order a replacement column from flaming river or somewhere else?

Re: steering column rebuild

I'm running into the same issue and my C10 steering wheel grinds on the bearings and my turn signal sticks, any help would be appreciated. I can't find out where to get the bearings anywhere, I've tried o'riellys, autzone and advance and no one has the bearings behind the wheel.

Re: steering column rebuild

I took mine apart years ago, replaced the bearings and cleaned everything up and re-placed the grease. it wasnt easy but I was sure glad I did it.

Re: steering column rebuild

cameyer: the upper bearing is part of the turn signal switch. it really depends on how brittle the TS switch is. they sell new one but they arent cheap and they arent exactly like the originals either, but they will work.

Wallee: the best thing is rebuild if you can. the alternative is replace with a known good one, but know this, the 60-66 are umong their own, no other mounts like them ( big cars in the same year range I think are also like the trucks) so you have to "customize" them.

Re: steering column rebuild

I am in the process of rebuilding a column, the one I bought seems in excellent condition, but I think I will replace the bearings anyway. The column in my truck is badly worn, but I will keep it as a spare for down the road. I am also shaving off the shifter nub while I am at it. Appreciate the link to the column bearing, thanks!

Re: steering column rebuild

they are loose ball bearings that go in there , just like bicycle wheels used to be. there bearings have more than likely dropped and just the race is left

Thanks for the link! I couldn't find that sucker anywhere. Not bad prices on there. I got my rag joint done so hopefully a new bearing will make it feel almost as good as new.

Re: steering column rebuild

im replacing my turn signal in my 64. is their a bearing that goes under the turn signal switch on the steering shaft? I know their is one on the upper part of the TS itself. But, my steering shaft sort of leans to the right so when i put on the new switch it rest up against the upper bearing. It didn't seem right to me.

Also, am I supposed to have a spring on top of the switch before I put the steering wheel on?

Re: steering column rebuild

Mine did the same thing when I replace the upper bearing. The problem is motlikely the lower bearing as that is which takes most of the weight I the shaft. I ended up just going with an ididit replacement column took basically the same amount of work and now I have 4 way flashers and a tilt column for much more comfortable driving

Re: steering column rebuild

ok, so their is only the lower bearing near the bottom of the steering column. Their is nothing at the "top" of the shaft, before the turnsignal switch bearing.

Re: steering column rebuild

I know this is an old thread but its ill I've found in the search. Does anyone have a pic or a part number of the lower bearing? Where exactly does it live in the colum? Near the bottom of the sleeve? My horn always sounds and the wheel binds a lot. ( going to have to touch up the back) . Thanks

Re: steering column rebuild

I just rebuilt my steering column - 1965 C10.
The lower bearing design is not the best but you can get brand new bearings if you can't rebuild yours or don't want to rebuild it.

I had my column completely apart.

There are 2 bearings. The lower bearing has a tendency to fail.
Examine the shaft where the lower bearing lives to see if there are deep grooves or wear marks.

Take photos of each part when you disassemble.

Re: steering column rebuild

The upper bearing is part of the turn signal and lives beneath here.

Here's another view of the lower bearing.

Re: steering column rebuild

Ok cool. Thanks for the pic. Problem is when input my colum back together there was no bearing to be found. So I never installed one. Do you know the bearing part number by chance?

Re: steering column rebuild

The lower bearing might not be rebuildable, but mine was. There is a felt washer/seal and a C shaped clip that holds the felt in place. Make a paper cone to hold the ball bearings in place until you insert the bearing race. Then comes the felt and C clip. These pics were made to show how it goes together but YOU MUST USE GREASE when you actually rebuild it. Just sayin'!

Re: steering column rebuild

The link I posted may not work unless you refresh the browser page. Those are the correct part number for the vendor American Classic Truck Parts.

americanclassic.com

Just make sure the steering shaft is in usable shape so it's safe.
