Cool Original Truck Bed Paint

Getting ready to purchase a 1961 C30 Chevy Stake bed. 1owner truck, all original. When you look at the bed, the wood is original and in great shape, so I want to retain it. I know that back then the color was black. Does anyone know if that was a stain or paint? I've searched the web and can't find a thing on it.

Thanks

Re: Original Truck Bed Paint

I know the regular beds were painted, not sure about the flat beds but I would imagine they were done the same way.

Re: Original Truck Bed Paint

Paint on standard bedwood. For sure paint on every original truck I have seen 62-66, and no reason to think 60-61 would be any different. Not flat, not gloss, but somewhere in between.

Re: Original Truck Bed Paint

Original beds were treated with linseed oil tinted with lampblack. The FAQ section might have info or search the forum or Google it for more info. Mar-K did an interesting piece showing the long term durability of different paints and varnishes used on bed wood, you can find it here under "Bed Wood, Bed Strips, Angle Strips."

Here is a thread that shows the original black paint and left over masking - http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=671048&page=5
Shows the date stamp on the wood on page 6.

Re: Original Truck Bed Paint

Looking good! Is that a repaint? What does the paint code say on the trim tag?

Re: Original Truck Bed Paint

On the C30 stake beds , heres my 1960 C30 with 502 original miles , its actually of the original key but the contrast between the steel and wood is also shown. Not sure whats protecting the wood but its not painted like pickups. The bed strips are painted like the outer bed rails. Nice 1961 by the way !

Re: Original Truck Bed Paint

Based on information tested by Mar-K, I followed their direction and painted my bed wood with 2 coats of POR-15 followed by 2 coats of Behr Exterior Grade Semi-Gloss Black. the finish has held up very well, but she is garaged.

Re: Original Truck Bed Paint

Yes...its a repaint. Paint job is about 30 years old. There is something to be said about keeping these old trucks inside garages. This truck has been garage kept for 58 years. Bed wood and stake racks are all original wood. Pretty amazing find for sure. Thanks for the reply!

707 Is the paint code. The paint job is actually about 38 years old. Original owners son painted it and did a really great job.
