LS1 front brakes

I was on an S10 site and I came across an article on installing Camaro or Corvette brakes on an S10 -

https://www.s10forum.com/forum/f14/c...d-info-522849/

So I thought I'd ask if anyone here has done such a swap. I see it needs some machine work done to make it work, but it is supposed to add some front stopping power. The S10 site highly recommends the upgrade.

I have been told the 98+ Blazer front brakes are an easier upgrade, but only a little better at stopping the truck.

Re: LS1 front brakes

You can buy the kits without having to machine your own hubs. The only thing you may have to do is drill/tap the spindles holes larger for caliper brackets. I have access to a milling machine, so this wasn't a problem. Though the S10 spindles may not need this mod (mine is Gen2 Camaro).

I bought one of those conversion kits with the hubs machined from rotors. For some reason, they cracked when I pressed new studs in them. So, then I bought new billet hubs from Kore3.com They're not as cheap as DIY, but same idea. The Kore3 hubs were expensive, but a high quality work of art! No regrets.

You can buy the brackets and hoses from a few different vendors. I bought calipers from Rock Auto, and EBC pads/rotors from an online store that had the best price at the time.

the blazer upgrade gives a bigger rotor, bigger pad (more swept area), and dual pistons. every truck I have done the blazer upgrade on (3 trucks so far) would almost stand on its nose. drop spindles for 98+ blazers are a metric ton of money though comparatively.

be very aware of the rim size you can run with a vette or camaro rotor and caliper upgrade. you might intend to run a 17-20" wheel but keep in mind that your 15" spare will not fit over the rotors. not that you should plan your brakes around a spare wheel, but some guys wheel tastes change, you may want 15s later. nothing makes me want something like not being able to have it anyway

Re: LS1 front brakes

Good points Joe. I have plenty of time so I'll continue to research this.

Re: LS1 front brakes

I have done this swap. Let me dig out some pics. I bought a bracket online (nowadays I probably would have fabbed it).

Brakes clear my 15" S10 wheels with spacers, but not without. Wouldn't clear most 16" wheels.

Re: LS1 front brakes

Thanks Bmac! I'm looking forward to the pics. How do you like the braking?

Re: LS1 front brakes

Looks like Chassis Tech drop spindles? Where did you get the hub and the bracket?

Thank you.

Re: LS1 front brakes

I saw that you sent me a PM, but I'll answer all that here, in case it helps someone else.

1st question, that doesn't look like a stock S10 upper control arm, is it?

No, I used tubular control arms from speedway for a G-body. I've heard mixed reviews on longevity, but I'm going to try them. More on that here:
https://www.speedwaymotors.com/the-t...-an-s-10/29071
I did not use a wider arm, because I didn't change the lower control arm. Expensive.
I also used the taller ball joint to try to fix the steering geometry issues cause by lowering. It's been a while, but you can look that one up.

This is the LS1 set up?

Yes, bought the front of a '98 Camaro. Hindsight: should have kept that rack and pinion.

You cut the spindle yourself?

Yes, probably used a Sawzall and Cutoff wheels back then. Have since bought a bandsaw that would make it easier. Go slow. It will cut.

Is that a drop spindle?

Yes, 2". I had a 2" static drop on an S10 in high school, and it was about right. More and it would have been undrivable.

Who made the spindle? Looks like Chassis Tech drop spindles?

You are correct. I've owned Belltech. Didn't see much difference. Decent reviews.

As for the hub, did you buy that or make it?

If I remember correctly, I bought the Hub and Bracket from the guy who started this post. I haven't dug through it again, but I believe his website is in this post.

You could have a machine shop cut the hub off of an existing s10 rotor.
