Need help with cam ID/selection...

Took my engine apart to install my new intake - has a torqer 2 going with a Performer RPM and Enginetech cam ES179R (223/223dur @ .050 and .447/.447) but I found a part# on the back of the old cam; E1211P. Looks like its a Elgin, suppose to be 224/234dur @ .050 .466/.487 lift.

So now I'm not sure what to do. Keep the old cam? Install the new one?? Buy a different cam altogether?

Thanks.

Why are you changing cams? Just curious but your going with a smaller cam, why not stay with the old cam and try the new manifold. I'm guessing this is a 350, what's the compression?

I was under the impression the engine was "stock"other then the manifold. So that's when when I pulled out of the cam and saw what I saw my jaw dropped. I'm not trying to purposely go with a smaller cam.

I have a sbc350, th350 with longtubes and a Holley 650DP. The rear end was a 2:73 and I'm in the process of putting in 3:42 gears in now.

I was upgrading because I wanted more power, more torque. It's a fun truck, light to light. But still do highway driving. SO I thought I was upgrading from a stock cam to a "bolt in" upgrade with a street intake manifold instead of that single plane manifold. Guessing the compression is stock at 8:1 with those 76cc smog heads. All this work part of me wants to buy heads to save myself the trouble of doing the tear down again.

The gear change will be night and day with your truck. You'll think you have another 100hp. I hear you on the heads, if the motors fairly low miles I would do it. You know how it is, you make a little more power then you want to make some more.

That Enginetech cam is a 350hp 327 clone. I would keep the Elgin cam if it looks good and get your money back on the other one. Spend it on a converter. A 2000 rpm stall will help immensely along with the gear change.
