I'm going, will most likley take the station wagon again. From what I've heard it's going to start in New Orleans, Louisiana, and will end in Detriot Michigan. Not sure of any stops in between.

Re: 2011 Hot Rod Power Tour

It will be 2800 miles for me to do the whole thing. I have done part of 2 legs once in 06 in a 69 Camaro I had at the time and once in 09 in my 68 Camaro. I am just a little worried it will get old after a few days. I also worry my truck will have problems. It does not have a/c and it starts in Florida which could be unccomfortable. My brother has a 61 Biscayne and also wants to go. He also does not have a/c.

Re: 2011 Hot Rod Power Tour

We went on the 2010 trip (Long Haul). The added up to about 3000+ miles on the 84 SWB. I imagine that this year will not be in our plans. It takes too much cash away form the desired things. I am going to start working on the 68 truck, this winter.

Over the years we have spent a lot of time doing the Power Tour. We were on the very first one in 1995, and then many others after that. I like the trip, but the running the back roads, like they did this year just out right stinks, too many stops. Try getting 50 to 100 ( that is the size some of the groups of cars become---of course everyone is basically lost) cars through a stop light or stop sign in a little back roasd community. It takes forever.

HINT to those that have never done this: If you are going down a backroad and there is no one sitting along the side of the road waving at you---YOU ARE OFFICIALLY LOST and no longer on the planned route.

Re: 2011 Hot Rod Power Tour

Unless you run ahead of the pack, the Long Haulers end up in parking lots a fair ways off from the center action area. Especially when they set up the night time activities ina down town area. That is just a fact of life. Leave earlier than the rest and pace yourself to stay ahead of thepack and you will do well at the stops.

Re: 2011 Hot Rod Power Tour

I've traveled the eastern and central US extensively and worked in all the cities mentioned except for Detriot...so maybe that will help me on the routes make time over most the others.

I see trailers on drag week, to carry tools and parts....but does anyone ever take their overnight accomodations with them on PowerTour?
I was thinking it might be cool to drag an old Airstream along to stay in.....so if my truck breaks down.... I can make a sandwich and then take a nap or something while waiting on the GMPP auto-medic truck to come along.

I saw a guy in a 63 Impala pulling a pop up camper at Bristol in 09. He was staying right there in the parking lot by the dragstrip.

Re: 2011 Hot Rod Power Tour

Years ago, there was this guy with a big old Pontiac stationwagon that had a camper ounted on it. he did three or four tours with it. If you want to camp, that is not a bad idea. I go for the thought that after a long day, I want a soft bed to sleep in. A lot of guys sleep in their vehicles.

There are those that will put the screws to you, if you are not careful. We were in a little town outside of Duquoin the motel owners did a swaparoo on about 40 tour people and doubled the motel costs for that night. It boiled down to we overbooked so we set up with the motel across the street, but it costs twice as much.

Then again there were the gunshots that got our attention.

Re: 2011 Hot Rod Power Tour

one thing about bringing a trailer along...you'd be near enough to your vehicle at night to know if someone was jacking with it...and since it is a cross country route and you'd be your own security at night, with a trailer or camper you'd have a place to store your firearm while you're racing.

I'm considering driving part of the route in 2011. It just depends if anything big happens in between now and then.

Re: 2011 Hot Rod Power Tour

Well, I'm having an issue. If I go, I WANT to take my truck, but I also need to be able to take my wife and two sons. I need a car we can all ride in, but I'd still want to take the truck. I really don't want to take 2 vehicles. I know my dad would let me take his 87 Monte SS, but it's not my car.

Re: 2011 Hot Rod Power Tour

I am planning on a minimum of the Indy to Michigan trip. Indy is only an hour from me. Maybe go down to Tennessee and cruise home...heck, who knows how much.

I think it would be kewl if everyone attending can get together ahead of time to make arrangements for the cruise. I am pretty new here but would like to meet as many members as possible. What are the other thoughts on this?

Re: 2011 Hot Rod Power Tour

is there a map of the route itself or is it known? i am sure they will be close in the montgomery al to nashville route. They came directly through town a few years ago. How does it work if you wanted to do just part of the cruise?
